LuJoy Purses and Such is a stay at home mom that loves to make purses. But most of all she loves the custom orders. She is the kind of person who can make your dreams come true when it comes to bags and her handmade quality is to die for! One thing that’s stands out above all else to me is the fact that LuJoy Purses and Such is dedicated and that is a rare quality to find! She obviously puts in a lot of time and effort into her work and that kind of perfectionist is exactly what a client wants! See something you like but want to make it an orginial to fit your needs? This is the crafty mom you want!
What got you interested in crafting?
When my Grandma died, I got her sewing machine. I had never sewn before! It collected dust for a few years, and when I became a stay at home mom, I REALLY needed a hobby to help break up the day. Purses sparked my interest, so I bought my first pattern – a Simplicity purse pattern. It really was simple! Even with no training in sewing 🙂 I was unstoppable after that…..I was a crafting monster 🙂
What has been your favorite project to make and why?
I really like when customers “create their own” purse. They have ideas that I would never have, and pick fabrics out that I never would. They always turn out so GREAT! I love making someones idea into an actual purse. And I really love when I see them out and they are using the purse 🙂
the secret behind your etsy name?
The name of my shop really is important to me. The “Lu” is for my daughters nickname, LuLu. Her actual name is Layla, so I don’t know where LuLu came from, but it still remains to this day! And the “Joy” is in honor of my grandma, from whom I acquired the sewing machine. Without her, I would never be where am in terms of crafting, or Etsy.
If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?
This is so easy to answer, because I dream of owning my own shop everyday! It would be a bakery, that specializes in gourmet cookies. I would have a full on coffee shop, with a drive thru window, because I know how busy people are on their way to work! We would also sell a few breakfast meals….biscuits and gravy, frittatas, etc. And of course I would sell my purses and other items!! I would also sell my friends and family’s crafted items-I know some talented people! As for the name, I still haven’t thought of anything that really gets me….LuJoy would be in there somewhere. Maybe LuJoy’s Bakery, Crafts and Coffee!
What is the most challenging thing you have made?
I had one friend request one of my patchwork purses, but 3x the size I normally make them! She was going to use it for a diaper bag, she had 2 small children at the time. Putting all that patchwork together was super time-consuming and took some concentration! I also had to go back to the fabric store about 3 times to get more fabric 🙂 It turned out BEAUTIFUL!! I am so glad I took the time to make it. She still uses it to this day!
What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?
I really want to have a successful Etsy shop! I really want crafting to be my job (other than raising children)! For the first time, I am in craft shows this year and I really want to do well at them. That includes overcoming my fear of public speaking 🙂 I also would like to have my second child within the next year! I’m praying that will happen above all else!
What inspires you to be crafty?
I think it is just in my blood to be crafty. My mom does alterations for a living, and also does some crafts on the side. Both of my grandmas did a lot of sewing, and my daughter LOVES crafts. I don’t think it’s anything I can escape 🙂
What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?
It is absolutely the fact that I am a perfectionist about the things I make. If I see one thing that I don’t like even a little, I rip it out and start over! My husband and mom think I am crazy for the things that bother me, but the end result is a very dependable, high quality purse (or whatever else I am making)!
If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?
I think it would be better pictures. Pictures on the internet don’t really do justice for my purses, etc! You just can’t see the quality through a picture (that I have taken)! I have done the best I can with my Canon camera, but I don’t think they are good enough!
