Crafts WIP Wednesday!

31 Aug

Work in Progress Wednesday!!

This week I’ve been working on my first attempt to do a cowl scarf. The pattern I have calls for a much bigger hook than I own and much thicker yarn. I bought the thick yarn – then found out I didn’t have the right hook so I’ll have to go shopping again 😉 I couldn’t wait to get started on something so I went ahead and did a my own version of a cowl in a much smaller yarn and hook size than it called for. I haven’t quite finished it but it’s almost there!! Check it out:

I absolutely love how it’s turning out and can’t wait to get started on the thicker version. Here’s the picture of the on I plan on doing adventually:

Definitely a lot bigger and thicker!!

It’s weird but I’m actually excited for this winter! I don’t know if it’s because I have so many things I want to make and it’ll be nice not feeling guilty about staying inside like now when the weather’s so nice, or if it’s because I’m ready for hot soup and hot chocolate!!! For once I am excited for this winter!

Tonight I attempted making a different version of cheesy potatoes – It could have been better – but I am so proud of myself for trying! It actually felt good feeling like I was making something amazing from scratch. I’ll have to try again soon now that I know what I want to change to make it better 😀

Tomorrow is my day off and I have a few orders to fill but after that I plan on fixing up my storage. I’ve got a little organizing to do before I can really get my inventory up and stocked. I’m running out of places to keep things and it’s been a little chaotic!! I plan on showing pictures of the before’s and after’s and maybe even the in between’s so if you are interested in how to make things work in small places check back soon!

Oh and if you haven’t already stopped by DDsDarling’s is doing a giveaway that you can’t miss out on! It ends tonight at midnight! Check it out here!

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the week!

Love Always,

Daily Life: What I’m Grateful For

29 Aug

There are a million things I am grateful for. Sure we all have our days that seem like nothing goes or way but nine times out of ten, I feel lucky to say that I wouldn’t change a thing. It seems like when you meet someone who understands all those crazy thoughts you think no one would get, or laughs at your stupid comments, or better yet – loves you for all the mistakes you make – it’s like nothing else in the world quite matters near as much as that moment.

I’m lucky to say that almost every day I feel like this with my husband. I’ve got a few good friends I can count on when I just need that smile, and then there are people who I hardly know. People I’ve met through blogs, through etsy, through teams, BNRs, Raverly,, and it’s amazing how important these people are to my life. Some of them I’ve so recently met and gotten to know that you would think I’m crazy for having such a heartfelt feeling towards – but I do. In some small or big way these people have made me feel like I can accomplish all the things that self-doubt likes to destroy. It’s amazing what one person can do to your life.

I know this is a completely random post – but it’s been on my mind all night and it’s exactly what I wanted to say.

I love each and every one of you who have touched my life, given me that moment I never want to take back, and helped me accomplish things I never thought I could.

I love you all.

Crafts – Rock On!

27 Aug

I spent a majority of today painting & crocheting while I was waiting for the paint to dry! I must say watching paint dry is ridiculously annoying!!! Thank goodness I found something to do in-between 😉 I started working on the giraffe frame and the guitar frame. Unfortunately only one is done due to complications – poor giraffe will have to wait! My little painting hands are tired! But I did finish the guitar! Check it out 😀

I am completely in love with this little guitar – one because it’s hott – two because I’m a guitar hero/rock band fan – three it’s so hard to find awesome things for boys and I think this would be awesome in a little boys room!

I think I’m going to do one in red and one that turquoise just to mix it up and see what it looks like!

This is going to be an expensive addiction!! I haven’t posted this on etsy yet because I’m still doing a little tweaking but I’ll let you know when I do!

And for those of you wondering what I’m crocheting – I’m practicing my own version of a cowl. It’s going to be much thinner than this one:

But I’m working on learning different crocheting techniques so I can master it and then attempt this one! It’s probably not going to look much like this one because I’m using a much smaller needle and skinner yarn but hopefully it turns out awesome! 😀

I should be able to finish this in no time – with the amount of frames & painting I’ll be doing these next couple of days – I’m going to need something to do while the paint dries 😉

Okay – back to crafting!

Thanks everyone for stopping by!

Love Always

She also works on a side project called Doggie Woggie. It’s a Zine she created and currently works on with a friend. Doggie Woggie is an Art and Design driven kitsch independent zine for man’s best friends and their owners. She’s got a lot to offer for those of you who are starting out a business and might need a little help with marketing and promoting your store!”

What got you interested in crafting?

I have always been very creative since I was young. My Father is an illustrator/graphic designer as well and he taught me how to draw at an early age. My parents and a favorite Aunt really fed my creative outlets and always got me fun toys and kits that taught me different crafts and techniques. I was also able to teach myself things, like how to sew, by watching my Father sew his patches on his Navy uniforms. I’m very mechanically inclined and good at trouble-shooting technical issues so that kind of helps in my Design and capability to build things.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

I just completed a pillow in May for a weaving class I had to take as part of my BFA. I have just fallen in love with weaving because it is another way to build images. It’s like a crafty form of Graphic Design

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

My favorite Aunt I mentioned before was married to a bicycle maker who died at a young age. Silk Hope was the name of his bicycle company. The 86 stands for the year I was born. I created my account long before I ever thought I would have a shop.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

It would be called Flotsam & Jetsam which is actually the name of the umbrella in which all my projects fall under. I was raised in Virginia Beach so I really like old nautical terms and generally the phrase is kind of like a this & that or an yin & yang of the sea.

It would look like a kitschy-foo-foo cottage, or a shop down a cobble-street in a place like Middleburg, VA. I would sell a little bit of this and a little bit of that (*hint Flotsam & Jetsam). My hand-made goods, design services, and paper-goods.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

I built myself a vanity in a Furniture Design class when I was in college. It was challenging to learn how to use the tools. I guess not so much how the tools work but tools are not made for women and they are bulky and large so they can be a bit hard to handle. I hand-turned the legs on a lathe and I carved out all the joints that made the box that holds all my make-up. I also had to cut the reflective plexiglass plate that I used as the mirror.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

In the next year I really hope to get my Zine off the ground, start making rugs out of recycled materials, and coming up with a prototype for a Dog Bed I invented, ALL WHILE I maintain my clients. I recently moved to Northern Virginia after I graduated from ODU. I work a normal day-job as a Graphic Designer full-time but I have a client that I design websites for in Norfolk, VA and a client here that I am currently implementing a new identity for which entails all their marketing material.

What inspires you to be crafty?

I like to window-shop but I don’t like to spend money so when I see something I like I say why do I like that? Most of the time it’s the colors or patterns and I say I can make something in the like that I might actually need or that I might give to someone. Now I am using my little talents to try to make some extra money 😉

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

Not to be pretentious, but I am very good at selecting color combinations. I love color theory and it was one of my favorite classes I took in college. Luckily, or unluckily, I got to take it twice because it didn’t transfer from one college to the next.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Two things that I think everyone wants, money and time lol. More money to promote my store on etsy and different sites. More time so I could do all the little projects I want to do. It’s amazing that even when you aren’t married or a Mom you still don’t have time 😉

If you haven’t stopped by her shops go ahead now! For graphic design go here and for her zine go here.

She also has a website you can reach her at here.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

Crafts: A Work-Filled Week

25 Aug

So I haven’t been around much on my blog lately and I apologize!! Between BNRing and filling orders I have been super busy 😀 Which I guess is a good thing right? So here’s a preview of all the things I’ve been working on the past few days!

I couldn’t pass up this robot material when I saw it!! It was the most adorable thing in the world!

This was a custom order! I love Dr. Seuss and she picked the best one 😉 I have one more burp cloth and a receiving blanket to make out of this 😀

I got an order for my monkey frame in yellow so it would be more like Curious George and I LOVE IT!

Apparently the monkey frames are popular 😉

Super excited about this one – I made this for a family member who is due with a little baby girl 😀

And finally!! I own my own business cards!! It’s about time right? I won’t go into how long they took me to make.. but sheesh!

It’s been busy around here! I still have a few orders to finish before I start the new things I bought but I’ll go ahead and show you a preview:

A burp cloth to be!

And welcome to the new additions to frames 😀 I couldn’t pass up these adorable little guys!! I have a feeling they are going to be super popular!! Let’s hope I’m right!

I also got the most adorable stamp in the world but I’ll save that for when it’s finished! It’s too cute to spoil! 😀

We are also still doing a giveaway from DDsDarlings Feature Friday so you still have a chance to win some awesome custom-made bows for that little girl you love ❤ I’m going to leave it open until August 31st! So hurry up and put your name in 😀

So that’s everything that’s going on right now! I’ll update with more pictures as I get the frames going and hopefully some new postings for etsy! Stay tuned – because this time I’m sticking around 😉

Thanks for stopping by!

This mother of three boys (Austin -13, Tyler -11, and Fisher-7 in two weeks but she says it’s four if you include her husband) has been married for almost 17 years and her family hit a rough patch in life. Her husband was laid off for almost 18 months and she was determined to help out as much as she could. She started making hair bows and crochet beanies to help but soon realized it wasn’t helping as much as she had hoped for. Her sister-in-law told her about Etsy but she was hesitant to sign up. After her birthday this year – she decided to give it a try because she said she didn’t have anything to lose! She’s now absolutely in love with Etsy (Thank goodness or I wouldn’t be able to druel over her shop 😉 haha) and fell in love with the people and crafts she saw. It doesn’t take much for you to fall in love with her – she wears her heart on her sleeve and she’s definitely here to make others smile. I love her kindness and I hope one day someone returns that kindness back as much as she deserves it!

What got you interested in crafting?

I’d have to say my mom. She is the inspiration for most things in my life. She is a very creative, and imaginative person. She has instilled a love for creating things from something someone else might perceive as junk. She is also, a very loving mother and grandmother, she puts her family first in her life. I can only hope to be 1/2 the mother she was.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My nephew was at my house for my son’s birthday, when he saw the cake he said “DD you need to make me a birthday cake for my party”. (he was turning 3 soon after) I of course agreed and then he put in his order, a “Tow Mater” cake. Three weeks later, he had his party. The minute I walked in the door he wanted to know “where is my Tow Mater cake”? I brought out the cake and he was ecstatic! He ran around gathering everyone up to come see his cake I had made.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

When my brother was little he couldn’t say Delana so he called me DD. So when he and his wife announced 3 years ago they were preggo I knew immediately what I wanted to be called. It only seemed right that when I opened my shop I name it DDs Darlings, not only are the items I make darling, they are all my darlings. (just like my nephews)

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

Well, I kinda already have a “shop” in town. I was lucky enough to have a friend who recently opened a beauty shop and she had an extra room. In exchange for cleaning her shop on Mondays she allows me to us the room to display and sell my darlings. It is of course called DDs Darlings.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I hope to be established enough to open a real shop of my own and to grow my business both here in town and on Etsy. I love all my customers. They have all quickly become much more, they are now friends.

What inspires you to be crafty?

For me it changes day-to-day. I do so many different crafts that I never know what I’m going to do from one day to the next. Sometimes I feel like the cartoon my youngest loves “Phineas and Ferb“. lol

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

I think it is the love I put into each one. If I had a daughter to share them with I probably wouldn’t have a shop. 😉
Also, my carefree attitude. I don’t sweat the small stuff. The items I sell are handcrafted one at a time and with that comes some “character” and that “character” creates CHARM. I also try to keep my prices low so everyone can afford the custom look that we all love.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Models!! Try as I may, I can NOT convince my 3 boys that they would be so cute modeling my bows and dresses.

If you are unsure of what a BNR is? Here is my description from yesterday’s post:

“Today I am working on my first BNR with Etsy! It’s baby related items – which I love. I’ve never done a BNR before so I had some serious training to do ;) First of all a BNR is a treasury list on Etsy that you can buy from in order to be featured. It’s called Buy and Replace. Some people buy in order to get a spot on the treasury list and other people buy because they want the item and it’s just a bonus to be featured! The best part of a BNR is even if you don’t have a shop or want to be featured you can shop away! Most of the stores give away coupons like percentages off or free shipping for purchasing from a BNR so if you are just a buyer you luck out on an awesome deal that you wouldn’t get just being a regular buyer from the store!”

So stop by and show us some love!
