Feature Friday Presents:

SeasonsHandmadeCards!

“My full-time occupation is a teacher. I started in fashion but decided to become a teacher, and I absolutely love my job. I am a busy mother of three, who also LOVES scrapbooking and card making and have decided to use this passion to create a small business. Due to my fashion background I pay attention to detail. Many of my invitations will be hand chalked/inked, have glitter or embellishments (e.g., pearls, buttons, flowers).”

What got you interested in crafting?

I have always crafted since I was a child e.g., knitting, sewing. I really got into paper crafts when I had my first child and I wanted to make a scrapbook of his life. Three kids later and two cricuts later and I am addicted!

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My favorite projects to make have been my children’s scrapbooks as they love going through their book and remember the events. They are even beginning to tell what photos they want included.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

My etsy name Seasons came about because I make cards that cover the seasons.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

If I could open a shop I am not sure what I would call it but it would probably have pinks and chocolate browns (favorite colour combination).

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

I think each project is a challenge as I try to come up with designs that are not already being made.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

Within the next year my goals are to add new products to my shop and to make sales.

What inspires you to be crafty?

The card challenge sites inspire me to be crafty as there are guidelines one has to meet, and ideas just pop into my head.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

My best quality when crafting is being a perfectionist. I add details ie shading using chalk, and if I am not happy with a project I start again.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

If I could one thing to help my store it would be more sales.

Away from Home

22 Jan

I don’t know what it is about sleeping alone but I can go through an entire trip and be just fine until it’s time to fall asleep without my husband by my side.

I’m beat tired and in desperate need of sleep but here I am wide awake. I tried reading and listening to music but none of it is working.

You would think with the waterfall and river flowing by or the pitter patter of rain hitting the tin roof that it would lull me to sleep. Being without the one person who makes you feel so comfortable and worry free is taking a toll on me.

As much as i have loved every minute of this trip and would do it again in a heart beat I am excited to be back in his arms.

Feature Friday: amandajocrafts!

20 Jan

Today’s Feature Friday Presents:

amandajocrafts!

amandajocrafts is one of those happy accidents. Its owner, Amanda Jo, was in her senior year of college when she was given the opportunity to enter into a free craft fair at her school. Loving crocheting, she started searching for things she thought would sell, and amigurumis sparked her interest. Encouraging by how well the craft fair well and all the positive responses she received, she decided to take amandajocrafts online! Amanda Jo is a recent graduate who majored in English and does not know what she wants to do with that. (Well, she does, but it involves being the next J.K. Rowling, and she tries to be practical.) For now, she’s delighted to have a big family, a good job, and be engaged 🙂

What got you interested in crafting?

My mom is a very crafty woman, though she’d never admit it. She taught me how to sew, knit, crochet, needlepoint, etc, and was always there to help me when I got in over my head with patterns. I continued making things because I believe there’s something truly beautiful in handmade items; it’s like magic. Wearing something you’ve created, or seeing it hanging over the couch, or playing with it while it keeps you company on your desk is such a warm feeling — you know you’ve brought that piece to life.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My favorite project in my shop is making the octopi. There’s something so fun about creating all the squiggly legs, and they always have so much personality afterwards! 🙂

Although, I’ve recently been getting into “themed” things (Harry Potter and Star Wars). They help cater to my strong tendency toward sci-fi and fantasy, and they have a great fan base on etsy that really brings in a lot of views!

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

Unfortunately, my etsy name is pretty bland. When I first started, I didn’t know if I wanted to keep just with amigurumis, or expand to other crocheting, or add some lino prints and litho prints (I also LOVE printmaking). So, I kept it pretty simple to allow for growing room.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

If I could open a store for my amigurumis, it’d probably be called (though the title is QUITE subject to change!) Amanda’s Adorable Amigurumis. It would be brightly colored, covered in fun, massive amigurumis, in all colored and animals. It would be a bustling, stupendous playground for everyone, and I would encourage jumping in the mound of baby amigurumis 🙂

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

The most challenging thing I’ve ever done was create a linoleum print that was 24″x36″ of a girl standing in a field holding sunflowers. It was a reduction print with five colors, which means you have to cut some of the linoleum, print it, then cut more and print that, etc. It’s a mind-blowing, intricate process that is also the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Now that I’m out of college, I don’t have the materials to do another one, but someday *crossing fingers* I’ll be able to again.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

Well, I’d love to keep plugging away at my shop. It’s been an uphill battle to get attention, as the vast majority of etsy sellers know, but it’s also been so rewarding for me that I’ve never minded. I’d love to expand my fan base, really.
I could make lofty plans to make etsy my full-time job, but I’m also trying to be realistic, and so I know that’s nearly impossible at this stage in my life.

What inspires you to be crafty?

Everything! I swear, the second I sit down and tell myself to take it easy, I’m whipping out my latest amigurumi, dragging my ton of scrapbooking stuff into the living room to update my books, picking out patterning for a new blanket, starting a new sweater…

Every thing I see, I think I can make it (even if I maybe can’t :P). Every thing I touch, I want to know how it’s done. That “craft” gene just does not sleep!

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

Without “tooting my horn,” I like to think I bring personality to my amigurumis. They’re not just things, they have a life to them. It doesn’t matter if I use the same pattern twenty times, they’ll all come out looking just a little bit different. I love that I can breathe that life into something and make it coveted.

At the first craft fair I did, a pre-teen girl came up to my table and fell in love with a little white rabbit. It was a tiny thing, and she just kept holding it and hugging it and saying how cute it was. After she bought it and moved on, I could still see her holding onto that bunny through the other booths. I love that I’m able to make someone that happy.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Hmm….I don’t know if it would be endless time to create, more collateral, or more views! Right now, I’m really happy with the opportunity to create, and I’d love to have the resources to share that some more 🙂

Keeping up the good work!

19 Jan

Okay, so I started out today with a plan of attack! I had places I needed to go and was hoping to get rid of a lot of the purging that I’ve been doing in order to make my life less stressful. Who know it would be hard to get rid of perfectly good things!? For someone like me who loves to make other people’s unwanted items my own, I was shocked at how many places just didn’t want items! So I came home with about half the carload I took out this morning waiting for my next opportunity to pass them on.

I will say I was a little more than frustrated at a certain place for telling me to come at a specific time, and then in return saying it was a bad time that I should come later. It’s not that easy when you have a two-year old on a time schedule and it’s an hour drive just to get to the store! But enough negativity right? I tried to stay positive and breath.

After coming home I decided to take my mind off of it by distracting myself with mindless things like BINGO. As sad as it is to say, it’s one of the few games that I could sit in front of for hours and not know what happened with my time. Which on a day like this, is fantastic! Then after I had my fill I sat back and realized it’s not that big of a deal. It wasn’t meant to happen today and I might not have a clue why right now but eventually I’ll figure out why today went so horribly wrong. I like to think everything happens for a reason, so who knows, maybe I’ll be surprised with a great opportunity later on that I can’t pass up!

And now that I’ve wasted an hour on BINGO I can think clearly and concentrate on what else I want to do today!

For those of you wonder how the listless week (that turned into month) has been going – it’s going GREAT! I’ve been doing dishes almost on a daily basis, I got rid of my recycling bin so now I take it out daily, I’ve done a load of laundry a day – which I need to go do one now 😉 haha, and I’ve been randomly picking up things, reorganizing, purging, as I go! Instead of making a list of things I want to get done that is just overwhelming I’ve been able to get more done than I have in three months!

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not stressing over the list or if it’s because I have so much more time since I’m not wasting it on making the list, crossing off the list, checking the listing, adding to the list! Instead I’m just doing things as they come.

One thing that piles up quickly in this house is paper. Whether its mail, coupons, notes, lists, recipes, or just plain trash. It likes to find itself in a few places in my house and it adds up so quickly! The past couple of days whenever I got a piece of paper I’d decide if it was trash or not, throw it away or decide where it belonged. Put it away and tada! No pile. It’s amazing what a little task each day can do to an overwhelmed person!

I’ve been on the look-out to see if there’s anything else I can do each day to help keep me choreless, listless, and worry free! I’ll keep you updated if I figure out any new ones 😉

Love Always,

J
