Feature Friday: CherishedHeartShoppe

Feature Friday Presents….

CherishedHeartShoppe

I am a wife of two years, musician, piano instructor, and artist. My designs come from necessity – I can never find what I’m looking for when I’m looking for it. I heard of etsy from a friend, and decided to post some of my creations so others can find what they’re looking for when they’re looking for it.

What got you interested in crafting?

I was homeschooled all the way through from first grade and had a lot of free time on my hands. My mom is creative, so she definitely encouraged me to try different mediums. I even took art lessons until sixth or seventh grade, and climbed all the way up to oil painting. I’ve focused on jewelry and cards, though, since middle school. I love wearing jewelry, and it was cheaper to make my own AND it fit me perfectly. (You see, my wrist is only 5” around. What most people buy as a bracelet, I can use as an anklet.) And I love to send encouraging notes to friends and loved ones.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

I never have a favorite until it is finished. Oftentimes, I don’t like what I’ve anticipated, and really love what I thought wouldn’t work out.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

My husband Cherishes me. I love that word. And I love hearts; my  engagement ring is a heart. I wanted Cherished Heart Designs, but that didn’t fit into my shop name on etsy. The “s” on Designs made it too long. Cherished Heart Design? I don’t think so. I didn’t like “shop” – the spelling looks unromantic. My husband came up with the fancy spelling. And it fit! So, I have Cherished Heart Shoppe.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

I think I would keep it the same name. It would be very warm and calming. The interior would be designed in a romantic vintage style. Oh, and there would be homemade snacks.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

My Beaded Cuff Bracelets were the hardest to make. Wrapping the wires around tiny beads, trying to tie the wires in a knot at the beginning and end of the bracelet had my fingertips nearly bleeding.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I would love to be a stay-at-home wife within a year, creating and selling my designs from home. I have a deep longing to make all of my husband’s and my food from scratch (like even milling my own flour) so we’re eating all the available nutrients rather than preservatives and “enrichments” (chemical nutrients).

What inspires you to be crafty?

1) Necessity – not having enough in the budget for the many baby gifts, birthday gifts, and Christmas presents, and

2) Finding just the right materials, like beads or a certain color ribbon or a cute stamp. If it screams “use me!” then it inspires me.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

For better or for worse – I am a perfectionist. That’s bad for me, because I’ll drive myself nuts trying to make something “perfect.” That’s wonderful for my customer, because their item won’t be “imperfect.”

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

A few more sales! Actually, I would also love input from guests that stop by, like if they would rather have card sets than individual cards, how they like my jewelry designs, what were they hoping to find at my shoppe, etc.

What fictitious character are you most like?

I am just like Anne of Green Gables – in every way. My two favorite quotes:
1) If you’re going to call me Anne, just be sure you spell it with an ‘e.’ What difference does it make how it is spelled? It makes a lot of difference! Print out A-N-N and it looks absolutely dreadful, but Anne with an ‘e’ is quite distinguished.”
2) “If you only knew the things I wanted to say and don’t…you’d at least give me some credit.”

What got you interested in crafting?

When I finished school a few years ago, at the age of 18, I had a summer free before starting on my degree and I felt like doing something creative and fun, whilst also making a little spare cash! I stumbled across a website selling beads and findings and found myself mesmerised. I ended up filling my shopping cart to the brim and spent the rest of summer absorbed in beads and designs in my bedroom!

What has been your favourite project to make and why?

I enjoy each project individually. I love wearing earrings myself and feel naked without them so making them is a favourite. There’s always a pair that I feel sad to sell as I secretly wanted to keep it!

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

I think it was a glass bead ring I made last year. The beads were so tiny and there were so many of them! I remember it took a lot of patience, a lot of lost beads and very steady hands!

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

Well I would definitely love to sell more items! I’ve heard that the summer months can be a bit slow so I hope things will pick up around Christmas. I also hope to be making more custom orders for people!

What inspires you to be crafty?

I enjoy looking at other people’s creations and ideas and how everyone’s imaginations run wild. That really inspires me. I also love the thought of someone out there wearing my creation, my design, my work. I don’t plan on making much money out of this, as I like to keep my prices low, I mainly do it for the love of it!

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

I come from a very creative family, we all love to paint, crochet and do crafts in general. I also have a lot of patience and I’m good with my hands!

Why did you decide to go online?

I used to sell my jewellery locally but I live in quite a small community. Gibraltar is a small British colony at the southernmost tip of Spain, some call us a little bit of Britain in the sun! After a while I became limited and arranging meetings and sales in between my job and studies became stressful. I actually stopped making jewellery for a while as the hassle of selling was taking the joy out of it! After a year’s break and some major life changes, I was looking through my creations and I just thought it was such a waste to have them lying around. I wanted them to be seen! I did a bit of online research and found Etsy!

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Well hopefully this “Friday Feature” will give me the extra promotional boost I need 🙂 I’m very grateful for this opportunity!

DIY: Beaded Monogram Wall Art!

12 Sep

For those of you who saw my last post (or didn’t) here is how I made the Beaded Monogram Wall Art! It’s super easy, fun, and addicting! It makes me want to go buy a whole slew of buttons!! Here are the materials you are going to need:

Art Canvas is what I used – you can almost use anything as long as it can handle a staple gun!

Fabric of your choice

Beads!!!!!! It took me a few seconds to fall in love with these – but it took me a lot longer to not buy more!!

You’ll also need tacky glue or a hot glue gun – whichever you prefer.

And here’s what I did!

First of all – if your fabric is wrinkly it might be a good idea to iron it out! This will make lining it up and pulling it tight around the canvas MUCH easier and the end result will look a lot better.

Then wrap your fabric around the canvas. I used tape to lay it in place so that I had the fabric lined up where I wanted it before I tried to staple gun it down.

It’s a lot like wrapping presents!

Then if you are like me – you get a strong man to staple gun all the fabric down for you – because I’m a wimp 😛 or you can do it yourself!

The end result! Fabric on canvas!

Next step:

Lay out your beads how you want them to look once you glue them down. Make sure it’s in the center and don’t worry if you have to move the beads ten times – I did!!!

Then glue one at a time! After a while you start to get in a rhythm and before you know it – tada – you are done!

I love the way it turned out but once the glue dries (and it will dry clear) I am going to add a few things to spice it up!

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J

Crafts: Maroon & Gold

29 Jun

Yesterday I went shopping for yarn, paint, and thread for the craft fair I’m doing. It was seriously hard to find a gold color that wasn’t yellow, orange, or literally gold. What I needed was a golden-yellow. Luckily I found one that will do and had the same brand in a good maroon color but it’s not as soft as I would like it to be. I got started on making an all gold scarf today and I’m already a quarter way through after an hour and a half of straight crocheting!

The girls are going down for naps now so I’ll have another three hours to get it done. I might not finish it but I’m crossing my fingers I do! I also bought another punch needle from a different craft store while I was out. I’m crossing my fingers that even though this one cost less.. it works better. We’ll see how that goes 😉

I still have to go back at some point and pick out some beads since I decided I was going to do my beaded letters along with everything else. If all goes well I’ll be selling scarves (kids & adult sizes), blankets (also kids & adult sizes – these are already done though), beaded letters, e-reader covers, burp cloths, frames, and depending on this punch needle I might have a few pillows too 🙂

The thing I am most worried about is figuring out how to tag/initial all these things so that people will know it’s my work and have enough in time for the craft fair! I’ve set up a daily routine that I think will work for me which will give me a total of just under 300 items to sell. If I work on some weekends I bet I could get to 300 no problem. So here I was thinking I wouldn’t have enough to sell. Now I’m wondering if there’s anyway that I’ll ever sell 300 items in four days??!!

I’ll be posting the picture of the scarf, frame, and beaded letter I finish later tonight, so stop by and check them out!

Love Always,

J

Snowflaking it Up!

28 Nov

Target has a ton of amazing things that if you look past what they have you can really figure out some pretty cool things. My mom bought these garland ropes of maroon beads and these snowflakes. 9 feet long for $6.00 and she loved the color and size of the beads but wasn’t too crazy about the snowflakes. We had gone to a couple of the stores and couldn’t find what she was looking for and this was as close as it got. So I told her we could pull off the snowflakes and she could use them for something else. And this is my something else idea 🙂

More to come with this 🙂

Love Always,

J
