Saturday’s Special Guest!

24 Dec

Saturday’s Special Guest Presents:

It has been a year now since I started teaching myself how to sew… and I have enjoyed every minute of it! I learned of Etsy from a friend and that inspired me to find new ways to reach out and get my creations discovered. I made a fan page on Facebook, and created a twitter account, and finally started a blog this year in late June- which I enjoy the most! I try not to make it all about my shop, but a fun and friendly site that also helps other Etsy shops get discovered. I have a schedule; Fun Mondays, Chatty Tuesdays, Crafts At Home (Wednesday), Giveaways (Thursday), and Picture This (Friday).
I have always found it relaxing to be creative with my hands- the kind of person who buys used furniture to take home, to paint and fix up, or spend an afternoon baking and decorating baked goods. I love to rotate what I do also so that I never feel like I am stuck or burnt out.
I can recall some memories growing up where I would be creative – such as making a catalog while in elementary school of items I owned for my brother, just incase he wanted to buy something 🙂 and even in highschool- there was an assignment of writing a short story… I bought large poster board sheets for each page, creating bright colorful pages with my story written out, I even recruited friends to help record a tape of the reading- along with sound effects to turn the page.
Any chance I see of being hands on creative, I will go for it. After becoming a mother I found many opportunities to learn new ways to be creative. When I see smiles and hear laughter, all it can do is make me wonder… “What else can I make?”

What got you interested in crafting?

I was born to craft! It’s always been a passion of mine since I was young enough to pick up a pencil. It’s in my blood too I think, both my mother and father were artists and my partner is too. Now my daughter is following the tradition, she can already draw faces and she’s only two, we spend many hours together painting and making collages.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

I particularly like making my felt letter brooches. The customers which order these usually want something as a keepsake which is personal to them. I made one for a lovely lady in the Netherlands recently. She told me it was for her soon to be born first son. I was so touched that I was asked to make something for her baby to be. I felt honoured that she thought my brooches would be a lovely gift for him to keep for many years to come.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

Gini is my nickname that all my family and friends call me by. It’s just short for ginger, the colour of my hair. It stuck when someone called me it at college and I’ve been know by it ever since. I like it, it’s more interesting and individual than my own name, which is Louise.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

Ah now I have this dream of my perfect career, it would be to open a little boutique in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, which is far more inspiring than my home town I’m afraid! So my Etsy shop is based on that idea, a cute quirky little shop which has all manner of gifts, decorations, jewellery and accessories which is fun to browse around. I always wanted to call it Gini’s Boutique, I can imagine the sign above the door and gorgeous view out of the window, if only it was true!

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

From my shop I would probably say my felt name plaques. They took a long time to develop. I made a few versions before I was happy with the final product. The dowling idea came to me after lots of pondering and frowning! It was all worth it when I get the lovely comments from happy customers telling me where they have hung them.
Another thing which I have developed over many years of practice and designing are my Dorset buttons. I would call these my ‘speciality’ as I’ve become quite skilled at them and they’re quite unique on Etsy, not many people have heard of them and other people certainly don’t make them into what I do. I really enjoy making them and if I had to pick only one thing to make for the rest of my life it would be these.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

More sales, ha ha, I’m sure that would be everyone’s answer, but seriously my aim this year is to make make make. I’m trying to fill up my shop with as many things as I can, pass that golden milestone of 100 items for sale. I’m also trying to promote myself more to gain more sales. I have a facebook fan page which I update every day with new products, sneak previews, my creative processes and generally what’s going on in the world of Gini’s Boutique.

I’m also have my first Christmas craft fair stall this year which should be fun, I’m trying to make lots more of my gingerbread men decorations to sell and hopefully more swarovski jewellery.

What inspires you to be crafty?

Everything and anything. It’s in my nature to make and I can’t imagine life any other way. I look around me and see colour, objects, people etc which inspire me and send ideas running around my head. I have a huge amount of scrapbooks, notepads, post-it notes all over my desk containing my ideas which I add to on an almost daily basis. My trouble is that I have so many ideas it difficult to find the time to make everything that I want to.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

I would say putting myself in other people’s places, I tend to do this in life too. I like to come up with items I think my customers would like, not just what I like. When creating a custom item I like to ask questions about the person it is for to get an idea of their personality ‘type’. I give them options to choose from, I generally show them or send photos of colours etc so they can be involved in the creative process. It’s more personal to them that way. I think as a crafter you can end up becoming very set in your ways if you only create what you would be happy to own or wear yourself.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

I guess more exposure, it’s hard to stand out from the all the thousands of sellers on etsy and get noticed. I actively promote my shop and products as much as I can but there’s only so much you can do in the time that you have. I’m really loving doing interviews because it keeps me on my toes and makes me really think about where my shop is heading (in the right direction I hope!)

Crafts: Work In Progress Wednesday!

9 Nov

Welcome to Work In Progress Wednesday! Here is where I show off whatever I’m working on for the week and I also give other shops a chance to show off what they are working on. I’ve always been a big fan of getting to know the person behind the shop and I feel like this is a great way to give everyone a chance to see a little bit behind the scenes of the lives of some amazing shops!

This week I’ve been working on a few custom orders, a burp cloth set for my next craft show, and some cup cozies I’m doing for a giveaway! Although it seems like a lot – it’s been a lot less stressful and a lot more fun this week. I’ve decided to take a new attitude to getting things done in a rush! Instead of panicking and pushing myself and being unhappy I decided to go with the, “Don’t worry! It’ll get done in time!” method. Not only did everything get done in time – I’m ahead of schedule! So here’s a picture of cup cozies I’m in the process of making:

Probably sometime next week I’ll have these posted in my etsy store! DaydreamingGifts

Here are some other stores I think you might like:

“This set of 4 “farm animal” blocks is $ 15.00 and it’s for a sweet little girl named Anna.  This customer was one of my very first sales a few months ago.  I made custom sets for her  little ones.  She CAME BACK to purchase gifts!!! It’s very, very exciting and I am so grateful to have such wonderful shoppers. I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love :)” – MiaBoo

“This is a pair of my bow pants in the works.  The legs are done and ready to become a pair of pants and have the bows attached.  Behind those are stacks of Christmas preorders that are in various stages of completion.” – BridgetandCo

“This is a shopping cart cover for your little one that will make you never want to go back to a life without it! There are so many awesome features that stand out from others – it’s super cushy, reversible, made with materials specifically for baby (not hard metal), and has pockets for mom!!” – iBstitchN

This is made by iBstitchN – click on the link to see her shop!

“This darling toddler apron is made from designer fabric. It’s perfect for playdate, playing dress-up at a cafe, or helping mommy in the kitchen.” – babybarista

This awesome shop has an amazing Pre Black Friday deal going on! Type in Dreamy at the end of your order in the Coupon Code box and get 25% off!! This coupon won’t last so if you need some awesome Christmas presents for any babies or toddlers in your family hit this store up while it’s on!! This is made by babybarista – click the link to check out her shop!

“I got a lot of these clear glass coin like stones and decided to do something a little different with them. So I start by drilling a hole in to them, I sort of marble paint them, apply a clear glaze to protect it and then wire wrap it! It takes a little time to do this project, there are a lot of steps to it but I love the result and I think that it would work well with custom pieces.” – sweetnotion

Made by sweetnotion – click on her link to see her shop!

“This a button up diaper cover is crocheted with acrylic yarn and is accented with a wooden button. This is perfect for photo shoots or if you just prefer cute diaper covers with outfits. This is small enough for a newborn and up to 3 months.” – nicolesbreastfriends

I hope you enjoyed the WIP Wednesday! We’ll be doing this every week so come back next week for some more fun!

It only took a few hours for me to fall in love with the women I have met through BNRing. Each one of us do completely different handmade crafts and yet we all have so much in common! Our goals are so similar it’s scary 😉

This week I’ve been working with some old BNR friends and some new ones and I can’t even explain how amazing it has been. Check out some of the amazing things they make below or come join us and chat in our BNR. Daily Life: 6 am Suprise!

27 Feb

Waking up at 6:30 a.m. to me usually means horrible, rough, no good, gonna need a nap day. But today was not the case at all! I woke up wide awake and ready to tackle anything in my way! I sat down trying to think of all the things I could do that are quiet enough not to wake up B or E. Then it hit me, it’s impossible to do any budgeting when B and E are around. To me that’s something I need to do in complete silence! So I sat down and planned out how much of each of the bills were going to get paid with our tax money and then figuring out how much was left. Then it hit me!

We are going to have our usual amount of money to go towards bills that we do every paycheck ALONG with the tax money!!! I calculated it all together, calculated the total of our bills and BAM! They were all paid and there was more money left over! I couldn’t stop jumping up and down and dancing and smiling so big! Financial freedom!!!!

B has asked me once we figured out how much tax money we got if he could use half of it to put towards a new car and we both agreed it would be a good idea. With all of the bills paid besides our two monthly payments (that will never go away) we have plenty of money to pay for a car for him! Not only that but the original down payment that I had planned on saving has now almost doubled with all the bills being gone! Ahhh what a relaxing thing.. and on top of all that with my new job, that paycheck is now being split half and half, half for savings, half for PLAYING!

I have never been this excited about bills before 😛 Lets just say that play money is going towards some serious craftiness 😉

Things are just falling into place and making my life amazing!

Once I calmed down and still had to wait for hubby and pipsqueak to wake up I decided crocheting was the next quietest thing to do, so one more scarf done and on the next one! If I keep up with it as much as I have these past couple days I could easily make one a week with still having free time and getting chores and errands done! Who knows maybe by next winter I’ll have enough to make a nice big Christmas check off Etsy and possibly keep from adding anymore bills!

Hope everyone else is having a fantastic weekend too!

Love Always,

Daily Life: Rearranging, Crafts, & SHOPPING!

7 Feb

Oh what a day it has been! And yes, I did it again 🙂 I rearranged this place like a crazy woman I thought I could make all this furniture work.. and I DID! We’ll just have to see if the husband approves when he gets home. Although I did a lot of couch lifting and moving and heavy side table shoving and sliding things are quite similar to the way they were before. Only a few things changed but I’m already loving my decisions and crossing my fingers B can at least handle it for a month, and then i’ll rearrange again 😀

So all that hard work made me hungry and we took a break then E and I made lunch and now she is laying on the couch wiggiling dancing while drinking her milk before nap time. Me? Oh I am typing this blog and planning my craftiness for the day 😀 I got so many good ideas some from family, friends, and my readers that I am going to try it all!! I still have two other ideas that I had bought the stuff for to try out that I can’t wait to do so we’ll see how many I do and what all I get done! I have a little craft rearranging to do now that I have more craft storage space but that won’t take long.

It’s only Monday and I am already EXCITED for the rest of the week 😀 Tomorrow I am dropping off E at Nana’s house and my mom and I are going SHOPPING! That’s right, this girl is going to finally spend her birthday and leftover Christmas money on things for herself!! We are going clothes shopping at this consignment store I am absolutely obsessed with! It’s called Plato’s Closet. They only take name brand clothes that are in perfect condition and sell them for half or less than half the price you would see in stores. Amazing deals!! Plus I haven’t bought clothes for myself since pregnancy and a few jeans after pregnancy.. this girl needs clothes. Nothing quite fits me right and I am ready to look smoking hott again 😉 or at least B thinks I am smoking hott!!

We are also stopping by Babies R Us to check out a toybin/chest something/anything to hold E’s toys that isn’t a hott pink bucket 😀 Something that goes with our furniture preferably and maybe even fun to look at!!! Haha super excited about that. Then of course there’s always a 90 percent chance I will find myself in a craft store! Which is why I am hoping to get lots done today so I know what I want to buy with the rest of my crafty money.

Well E is down for a nap, my music is playing on the surround sound, and I am dying to get crafty!! So I’ll fill you in later on what else this crazy mom gets done 😉

Love Always,

P.S. Thanks to all my readers, I hit 100 views the other day!! All of you reading is what’s keeping me writing/crafting. Love you!!!!

Routine Routine, back on the grind!

12 Jan

Okay so it’s obvious I haven’t been crafting as much as I was pre-holiday season and I haven’t been blogging as much either..

So starting tomorrow I am going back to my routine:

Getting out of bed when I wake up instead of laying in bed being lazy.

Since I’ll be getting up instead of lounging, I’ll be up before E.

Shower & get some hot chocolate in the morning to start off my day right!

Take an hour to do my usual blog reading and maybe even write and then goodbye computer until after dinner.

Start knocking off the daily things (dishwasher, laundry, vacuuming, etc.)

Then when E goes down for a nap, it’s me time. Nap, sew, read, crochet, or any other craft.

Lets get back to the daily grind!! Plus I only have 19 days to finish E’s jacket that I have been neglecting and crossing my fingers that T’s blanket is only a skane away from being done!

Right now I am halfway through skane number 3 with 5 more to go and the design on T’s. If I can make it so I only have 2 skanes left by the end of January I will be a happy camper!!

E’s hood to her jacket is what made me take a break from it. I realized that I have to completely undo it and start over to get it done right and I haven’t had the guts to undo it.. I might cry actually. But I guess it’ll be worth it in the end to have FINALLY completed it and be able to make a second one without having to undo it A THOUSAND times…

Well that’s all for now.. I am going to read and go to bed so I can start nice and refreshed tomorrow morning!!

Love Always,

The Reason

2 Jan

I realize I have been MIA but my excuses are good 😉

After holiday plans and remodeling our living room I am back on track! B designed a built-in entertainment center that he wanted and him and my dad got to work and made it happen. It’s crazy that it looks EXACTLY like B’s drawing to the T. We owe my dad huge, not only is he an amazing designer, but he amazes me on his building skills too. This is probably why I have always been super excited when it comes to designing and crafting things. He always took my picture and made it come to life. He see’s the thought that I have and finds a way to make it reality. I love this man.

Well here’s how it turned out:

It turned out so great! As you can see B is already enjoying it playing video games 😉

And now that things are settling back down I’ve gotten to play with some of my new toys like my new paper-cutter!

And I bought loads of paper at Sams Club

And some at the craft store

And tried it out!!

I also got to finally frame and hang up B’s stuff

And organize E’s toys

I am loving all the extra room now that the TV and video game stuff has its own place!

Next on my list to do is finish my first book on Nook that B bought me for Christmas, work on T’s blanket, make a window seat cushion, throw pillows, new curtains, and a few other things 🙂 This year is going to be seriously crafty!

Happy New Year!!

Love Always,

A little peak!

24 Dec

At some of the awesome gifts we got for Christmas Eve!! Thank you Nana, Dodo, and S&J!!

A bookcase for E! She is going to loooove this thing! This girl has a TON of books, and she will be getting a TON more! You can never have too many books 😉

A NEW SEWING MACHINE FOR ME!! Holy heck this was a surprise! Never in a million years did I think I was ever going to get one of these babies! I figured I would be pinching pennies for a lifetime just to get it! This is going to create some seriously crafty things 😉 and I already have a list of things to do 😛

And the best thing that ever happened to B 🙂 He has been playing it since we got home! hahaha. I love him and his addiction to video games! It’s funny how a lot of people complain and don’t understand the world of video games but I picture it to be a lot like my addiction to crafty things, my sister’s love for recipes & books, and my mom’s love for christmas. We all have our little world we like to be in and I guess it helps that when I was in middle school I spent my entire Saturday’s playing Mario Party, Tetris, Sims, and much more 😛 I totally get him!

Well that’s just a sneak peek! We got a TON of other amazing stuff, and a ton more to come!

Hope everyone else is enjoying Christmas as much as we are!

Love Always,
