Crafty Party!

20 Sep

This past weekend our team had a craft party! Everyone met up together and got crafty ūüėČ There was food, drinks, and craft supplies¬†galore! I thought I’d take a break from the usual crafty posts and let you in on what a crafty party around here looks like!

I think we all have enough supplies here to keep us busy for days!

You can’t have a craft get together without some crafty inspiration!

Afterwards we decided to make this an ongoing event. Every three months we’ll be meeting up to get crafty together and enjoy each other’s company. This group of people have become a great way to share my experience of blogging, crafting, etsy, and being a mom. When I started out with all of this – I didn’t have many people to share my experiences with and what better way to do it, then get crafty with people who share the same interests as you!?

Thanks for stopping by!

J

Q&A

What got you interested in crafting?

Ever since I was a kid I remember being crafty. We would make fashion shows of our school clothes and walk the hallway like it was a runway. I would write plays, make the sets, makeup, and perform all in the same day! I loved finding office supplies and thinking “What could I do with this?”. My father was a little annoyed by it! Ha! At the end of college my roommate taught me how to crochet. I couldn’t really make anything past a scarf at that point, but it got me on the right track.

About 2 years ago I started paper-crafting. It’s possibly¬†one of the nerdiest¬†crafts ever. You cut, fold, and glue cardstock into 3D¬†shapes. Most patterns are for video game or anime characters. I loved starting with something flat and blank and producing these giant sculptures! I then joined crafster and started participating in swaps. This really helped me branch out into learning different crafts and I haven’t stopped since. I want to learn how to make all the things!

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

Probably my favorite to make are these cute heart shadow boxes. The hearts stick out with an illusion of being 3-d. The pattern on the paper is so pretty I just like to stare at it.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

I knew I had to think of a really good name that suited me. I started doing sketches and all I came out with was Giraffes in Top Hats. When I was little I would draw giraffes on EVERYTHING! and then give them to my grandpa. I even have a giraffe tattoo! The name then appeared in my head and I couldn’t get it out. When you have a good idea, you just gotta run with!

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

I think I would still call it Giraffes on Parade cause I am in love with the name so much. The walls would be two colors, the bottoms fake wood painted white, and the tops a bright pink! The walls lined with simplistic one color paintings of giraffes and then in the middle in delicious glass cabinets would be all my pretty creations waiting for someone to take them home.
I’m pretty random most of the time, but I’ve always wanted a job where I can go dressed up. That’s how I think my shop would be. Crazy, Random, Cute, and very open.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?
I tried to make these felt lolita clip on top-hats once for a swap. They came out terrible! I got hot glue everywhere and they wouldn’t stand straight up. I felt really bad for my partner, but I loved trying something new.

The other hardest thing I would have to say was this papercraft¬†of about a 3/4 of a foot tall chocobo. The pattern came with no instructions because the creator thought “it was easy enough and didn’t need any”. Oi! I glued his head on backwards and his wings upside-down. It was a travesty.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I’d love to lose 10 pounds! But I mean… who doesn’t? ha! I think for my shop I would like to have a fun little community. I love hearing how much people love the stuff I make, how it made their day, how they use it all the time! I really want to make a difference, or be known for doing something stupendous. I want my cutie mark! (My little pony reference anyone?)

What inspires you to be crafty?

To get the creativity flowing I like to listen to music, mostly techno or classical, and look at other great crafts. I find that my biggest inspiration actually comes from requests. I am a people pleaser and if someone wants something special the ideas come flooding in.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

I am a slight perfectionist. I have to make my items look like they belong in a store. If you are walking down an aisle and you see two similar items, but one is bent-¬†you’re gonna want the one that’s not bent. If I send out something that’s not completely perfect¬†I feel like I’m disrespecting my customer. Which absolutely can’t happen! If it takes an extra day of production to make sure it is 100% the bestest thing ever, I would rather be a little late!

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Customers? Those would be really nice! I think of anything I could use a shipping expert, that part usually gives me the headaches!

If you haven’t already stopped by her shop, check it out here!

Thanks for stopping by!

Daily Life: Always Changing

8 Aug

Things have been changing around here lately! First off the big change is the look of my website ūüėÄ It took me probably a half hour just to pick it all out ūüėČ Secondly I added a button for my blog (that you can copy and steal and put on your website) and a button for my etsy page! It’s on the bottom right hand side —> check it out!

The other change is probably more of a sad change. Now that I’ve got all the materials I need There aren’t going¬†to be many “new” things to see. I am stocking up on inventory this month and next month for my first ever craft show so I’m making a lot of extra’s of what I have. Which ultimately means no new fun things for a little while. So to keep it from getting depressing around here I’ll be posting and adding pictures of what I am working on and hopefully throw in a few surprises¬†in-between. I am also going to be posting about how I am planning and setting up for a craft show. Since this is my first one if anyone has any tips or tricks don’t hesitate to share!

On another note – I hit the highest views since I’ve made this blog yesterday! 220 views!!! That’s outrageous ūüėÄ I love it. Hopefully you all stick around ūüėČ

Daily Life: My schedule failed..

1 Aug

I’m starting to realize what my issue is with my schedule and how I get so sidetracked.. and I am almost afraid to say it but I’ve got to let it out!

I can’t say no. It’s always been a “problem” of mine that I usually like to say it’s a blessing in disguise. There are so many things that have happened in my life that have gotten me where I am today because I didn’t say no when everyone else probably would have. But then there are times in my life where I feel like smacking my forehead and saying you flipping idiot!! Just say NO!

I spend so much time get myself organized and making a schedule. Getting everything prepared and chores completed so that I don’t have to think about anything else but what I want to get done that day. Then someone else offers to do something and everything I’ve worked so hard on just gets thrown out the window all because I can’t say no.

Normally it’s not a problem for me. I love last-minute planning and living life day by day and having a blast, but in this case – let’s just be honest here – I need time for myself.

So here’s what I’ve come up with. Because there are so many things going on this month that are just completely out of my control – I’m creating September STAY AWAY! That’s right – you heard it.. I refuse to do anything with anyone else – for anything else – unless it involves what I need to get done on my list. Why? Because I have exactly three months today (which includes a completely BOOKED august) to get all my crafts and things done for my first craft show.

I’m being Selfish in September. Sorry everyone!! But for once – this month – I’m saying no! ūüėČ

On another note! I’ll be getting a crap ton of crafts done so stay tuned for massive amounts of updates in September ūüėÄ

Crafts: A little too late..

20 Jun

Today was my first day back to work from vacation and as hard as I tried (I’ll admit not that hard) I haven’t stopped to craft. So project 5 of 5 ¬†will hopefully be here tomorrow ūüėČ I thought I would be exhausted from not being used to all the lifting, bending, playing, cleaning, feeding, walking – but I did a little something different today.

When the girls went down¬†for their nap. I napped ūüėõ So that’s my reason for not trying so hard today. Instead of using that three hours of me time to do something crafty.. I catched up on some ZzzZZzz’s!

Then¬†this afternoon instead of being crafty I played with E. Then we ate dinner, played some more, and went for a walk. After the walk we had tubby time!! We splashed and giggled and practiced¬†our ABC’S¬†123’s with the floaty foam letters and numbers, we washed and scrubbed and cleaned our ears and even brushed our teeth!!¬† Then I just put her down for a nap. And here’s where I get in trouble ūüėõ

It’s 9:00 .. and I just put her down! Luckily B is out playing softball with the boys or I would be in some serious trouble!!!!! E usually goes to bed around 7:30 – 8:00 so if I didn’t get anything done on my “me time” list this is when I usually jump up and get something done. After all that.. I think I am just going to sit here and crochet. It’s too late to pull everything out and even though I took a long nap my body is telling me no.

So I’m sorry for those who are waiting for a seriously crafty post :/ Instead I’ll send you over to my favorite crafty person’s blog because unlike me she always has awesome crafts with great photo’s to look at!

Daily Life: I’m in a commercial!

23 Feb

Today is filming day! I am doing a commercial for my sister’s company and I am super excited about it! It starts at 2:00 and probably won’t be done until 6:00 which is pretty much all day for me!! I’ve packed a few things to keep me busy in between¬†shoots like my crocheting, my nook (the craft book I’m reading), and a paper craft book/magazine to look¬†through for some awesome ideas. I skimmed through it last night and am pretty excited about making a list of some of the things I’ll¬†need to try out these tutorials! Also, not this thursday but next thursday I’ll be finally buying the cartridges that I want for my cricut!! I’ve been waiting so long and I’m finally going to get to buy them!

Well I guess I better go get last-minute things together, I’ll let you know how the shooting goes!!

Daily Life: On Top of the World

22 Feb

Today ROCKS! The house is clean, the laundry is done (not folded and put away but i’ll¬†do that later), dinner is in the crockpot, the kitchen is spotless, the dishwasher has run, and there is not a single miscellaneous toy on the floor. What an awesome feeling it is to be sitting here on the couch looking at a gorgeous place that I barely touched today (which is probably why it’s so clean). After my mom and I ran some errands we stopped at Olive Garden for lunch and I saved enough for leftovers. Then we did some more errands and went to the craft store!! I know, I know, it’s almost impossible for me to not go to the craft store while I am out. It’s just so much fun!! I bought six new colors of yarn to crochet scarfs and instead of paying what would normally cost 50 bucks, I paid 25. Yeah that’s right! Half off baby!!

I also took some pictures so you could see what I’ve been up to:

The pink scarf turned out wider and shorter than I thought but I still love the color and how soft it is!

This one I am in the middle of working on. It’s a skinny black scarf that I am contemplating¬†adding yellow and the Steelers sign on ūüėõ

The new toys I bought for S to play with when she comes over, Play-doh, Crazy 8‘s, and¬† Toy Story Puzzle

The French Dip Sandwich Recipe at the beginning

Halfway through being cooked!

E playing before we went to Nana’s

E slobbering down the best meal I have ever made! Chicken Alfredo!! It was the most amazing recipe ever, that I came up with on my own! ūüôā So proud of me and that cute little face.

I’d have to say that the most uplifting thing for me this week has been the craft book that I’ve been reading. It’s making me excited about crafting again, it’s giving me ideas, and making me feel like I can do so much with my little budget. It also helps that now that I am working my spending money is going to be increasing which will completely be able to fund all of my crafts upfront and if I don’t sell anything right away it won’t matter. Heck if I don’t sell anything it won’t matter at all! I finally feel like I’m not wasting money anymore, I’m finally feeling like I am investing in my future ūüėÄ

Things are getting better and better and I don’t want this feeling to ever go away. I’m on top of the world!

Love Always,

J
