Wasted Space Not So Wasted Anymore!

8 Jan

Emma’s closet has been only used for storage since she was born. We have a big chest of drawers for her and since her clothes are so tiny I would just fold them up and put them in there. We also had the changing table drawers for sheets and blankets so there was really never a need to hang up her clothes.

037

This resulted in using the closet to put things she wasn’t using in! For a while I’ve wanted to do something differently and I finally got the kick in the butt to change things up around here 🙂

038

Emma’s closet has this nook inside of it that I’ve been dying to make a little reading spot out of! So while I was giving the closet a useful makeover I decided to make this part a little place to hide out for Emma.

060

On one side she has her spot to sit and read with her books.

056

The other side is her stuffed animal pile and puzzles on top of the shelf. Sometimes she’ll crawl into the pile of animals and hide out!

054

The rest of her closet got organized and is finally be used for it’s main purpose!! For the past few mornings she’s had a blast picking out her outfits not that she can see them all!

050

When it gets quiet around here I know just where to find her!

Now I need to make a special spot for me to go hide and get things done 😉 I wonder if Emma would let me work on my blogging in my closet?

Love Always,

J

Old Jeans into Skinny Jeans!

4 Dec

Welcome to my pile of jeans that need a little TLC! They may have gotten into this pile for various reasons – they don’t fit, they aren’t in style anymore, they got taken in to get hemmed and the lady made them too short and they are now high waters (frustrated voice there), or I haven’t worn them in a few years.

003

Why did I hang onto them? Honestly – because I don’t know how to get rid of things and thought I could make SOMETHING out of it one day..

016

Welcome to that day! My sister sent me a pin from pinterest about how this girl made her not so cool jeans into skinny jeans. It took me about two seconds to try on all of the jeans that were in my “I don’t know what the heck to do with these” pile 🙂

018

Then the magic happened! First I put them on inside out, pulled the sides tight and pinned them so that they would be form fitting. If you’d rather not pin yourself in your jeans you can try using chalk to mark the line.

019

Then I took them off and ran them through the sewing machine. Be sure that you have a thick needle for this (mine is an 8 for jeans) or your sewing machine is going to take a toll and you might bend or break your needle.

020

Before you do anything else, be sure to flip them right side out and try them on. It’s going to feel weird having that extra flap of fabric but this is the only way that you’ll know if it fits you right before you finish them off and can’t undo it!

022

If it’s not how you wanted, rip out the seams and try again! If it is take really nice sharp scissors and cut along the link of your seam without hitting your stitching.

Then you can iron the edges down or let it wash and dry into shape. I like to wear mine around and break them in for the day 😉

001

What do you think? Actually – it’s probably best you don’t tell me what you think – because after doing this whole thing I realized I hate the way I look in skinny jeans.. oh well!

Knit Sweater No More!

27 Nov

Welcome to the knit shirt that I’ve worn for about 11 years … whew this baby has lasted a while! After cleaning out my closet I decided it was time to let go of this top and replace it with a newer version. Instead of getting rid of it though – I decided to revamp it!

I cut off the the sleeves so I would create a rectangle at the bottom. I’m saving the top for another project so there’s no waste.

I flipped the sweater inside out and stitched across the top of the sweater to finish off the edge and create a seam.

Can you figure out what I’m making yet? I’m sure you’ve seen it before – except it’s a little different this time!

Since I’m not exactly sure how I wanted to finish this piece off, I decided to temporarily finish it off with velcro. It’s an easy solution for a temporary fix!

I stitched around the edges to keep it on. If you haven’t figured it out – this is the opposite end of my shirt!

And TADA! A decorate pillow from your favorite top you just couldn’t bare to lose yet 😉

I’m pretty happy with the end result! Even happier that this project was completely free since I had everything I needed in stock. If you are considering doing this project you’ll need:

An old shirt or sweater: free!

A pillow: $5-$10 depending on the pillow and size.

A zipper: $2-$4 depending on the length

or

Velcro: $6 – but there will be extra left over for another project, so cut the price in half for this project and it’s $3

Thread: whatever you have on hand or $2 that will last you a ton of projects.
This project will probably run you between $7-$15 depending on what you have on hand!

What do you think?

Thanks for stopping by!

Spending Time, Not Money.

19 Nov

If you don’t know me at all – I’ll ago ahead and let you know that I’m 4’11, around 95 pounds, and 24 years old. Finding clothes that fit me but don’t make me look 15 like this picture below does – is DIFFICULT! A few weeks ago I went through all of my clothes and decided to get rid of all the things I haven’t worn in a while.

This jacket was one of them. The reason I wanted to get rid of? The sleeves were ridiculously too long, which doesn’t help my height factor at all. Other than that, I love this jacket! Would I ever find one that fit me perfectly? Probably not. So instead of getting rid of it, I decided to fix it myself:

First things first, I turned it inside out, flipped the sleeve over to the length I like (A little longer than my wrist but not past my nuckles) and left a quarter of an inch of length for stitching. Pinning this by yourself is not an easy task so it’s nice to have someone handy around to help you with. I didn’t, so I just looked like a goof doing it myself 😉

Then it was time to sew! I used my favorite X stitch to make it as durable as possible. It took me all of 2 minutes per sleeve.

My one suggestion to you is NEVER to cut it until you try it on and are happy with the length. Since I like things on the longer side this seemed perfect for me.

Then I took my scissors and started cutting right at the seam of my  new stitch. Be careful not to cut the stitching or cut through the second layer of fabric. I took my time with this part since I am super clumsy (if I don’t teach you anything, please just remember – impatience is not your friend with scissors!!!).

Once it’s cut all the way around it will look like this (inside out). Then you are done! Fixing clothes is not hard and now I can keep this jacket instead of buying another one that still wouldn’t fit me right 😉

Saving money but spending a little time. Since I have a pile high of clothes I decided to edit instead of trash – this will be come a weekly post. Looking forward to showing you what I’ve got planned for next Monday! It involves an old knitted shirt:

I’m pretty sure this isn’t in style anymore – but I wore it all through high school, and sadly up until now 😛

Thanks for stopping by!

Oh Hello Studio <3

17 Nov

Most of you know that I’ve been doing a lot of crocheting lately instead of sewing. Well this weekend is the first weekend in the past few months that I’ll actually have time to be in my studio!! It’s going to be so refreshing to be back in that room with loads of time and a list of things I want to make! Plus Brian will be distracted playing COD with the guys so he won’t even miss me 😉

Here’s a little sneak peak at what I hope to get done this weekend:

I’m going to be sewing buttons on the new cozies. I’m always hand sewn them so I’m going to give my sewing machine a run for it’s money! When these are finished they’ll be up in my shop for purchase.

After my sister’s wedding, we packed up the burlap squares and they’ve been sitting in this pretty box waiting for me. Well, I’ve finally found a project for them! I’ll be making placemats out of these!

I also have a pile of clothes that need some TLC. Since I’m under 5′ it’s really hard to find clothes that fit appropriately without looking like a teenager, so I have collected a pile of clothes that don’t really fit right. There are some jeans I want to turn into skinny jeans, some pants that need hemming, some t-shirts that need to be taken in, and some sweaters that weren’t getting any attention that will be turned into decorative pillows!

I’m going to have some serious fun this weekend. What are you doing this weekend?

Love Always,

J

Late Night Chats With Myself ;)

15 Nov

Even though you are reading this at some point and it’s probably Thursday for you – technically I am writing this at 11:15 pm Wednesday. So I’ll go ahead and apologize for the lack of pictures and random long sentences.

I’m sitting up after realizing that I have absolutely no clean clothes to wear to my appointment tomorrow. Little Mrs. Has It All Together from my list post yesterday, doesn’t quite have it all together 😉 Well at least not for tomorrow!

If you are a mom, you probably understand when I say that I tend to put everyone before myself. In this case, the rest of my families clothes managed to get done before mine. Silly me thinking I’d be fine with raggity t-shirts and leggings. Whoops!!

So tonight I will be sitting up listening for the dryer to stop so I can move loads in order to have an outfit that is allowed to step out in the public clean for tomorrow!

It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed up late and been the only person awake. If you have been a long time follower of my blog then you’d know that I used to do this all the time. It was the only way to get peace and quiet to myself. Emma was hardly napping for a while there and when she was, I was too!

I had gotten used to staying up later just to get some me time and I spent it sewing, crocheting, blogging, catching up on music and tv shows. It’s amazing that an hour or two of dead silence for your brain to think can really change a person! I felt so free, got so much crafting accomplished, and almost felt like a teenager all over again 🙂

My blogging might have even been better because of it! When I have time to think, writing comes so naturally. Like now. I could probably ramble on for hours because it’s like my mind has space to stretch out and breathe! That is if you like it when I ramble 😉

Staying up like this tonight is a reminder of all that. It’s also a reminder of why I quit doing it!! Sure an hour or two of freedom sounds so refreshing and exciting, but I was also dead tired the next day. I hardly woke up on time, counting down the hours to Emma’s nap time so I could nap too, and feeling like a zombie. I really don’t miss living like that. I missed out on so many fun things with Emma!! I’m not so much looking forward to that tomorrow – but at least I’ll be clothed properly.

Luckily tomorrow is a day off for me as well. Emma will be playing with Nana all day and I’ll be with my Mom in Alexandria for my appointment, her appointment, and then running a few errands. I’ll be able to not be completely all there tomorrow 😉 and if anyone understands that – it’s my Mom!!

As much as I’ll hate this tomorrow – I may just end up doing this again every once in a while. My brain needed it!

Well it’s time to change loads and catch up on shows 😉 See you all bright and early tomorrow and probably napping as soon as I get home haha!

Love Always,

J

My Favorite Thrift Store!

24 Aug

I talk about going to Blue Ridge Hospice Thrift shop a lot – but I’ve never shown you what it’s like to shop there so I thought the next time I go I’m taking pictures – and I did!

My favorite things about this thrift store are:

  • All the proceeds go the Blue Ridge Hospice
  • You get a points card and a punch for every time you shop there! I’m halfway through mine and I’ll get $10 off my next purchase of $20 bucks or more (which is not hard to do here).
  • They have everything in sections that are clearly defined so if you are searching for something specific you can easily find it.
  • They have two floors of thrifty goodness!! (This place is huge)
  • They have a room dedicated just to craft supplies ❤ They had me at hello.

This mirror was so cool – I am actually mad I didn’t buy it. I’ve been seeing these pins on pinterest where people design things around a mirror and this one seemed like a perfect match – but since my storage is overflowing I’m not allowed to buy any new big projects until I finish the ones I have 😦

These chairs were AWESOME! In this family we like dark wood and these would be perfect for us. I even like the fabric choice but it was a little stained so I would need to reupholster it (not a problem). The problem? We don’t need chairs, nor do we have room to store them. Another bummer.

Apparently I have a thing for chairs – but can’t you see these in a little kids playroom!? Oh so adorable 🙂

Then we come to the craft room -which I only took to pictures of because I was entirely to destracted by all the goodies to stop and take more pictures (sorry!) but check out this wall of baskets! If you can’t find a basket here – I’m afraid you need to make your own! They have every size and every kind you could as for – even cute picnic baskets!

Tada!!! The fabric section. I could probably spend a lifetime in here if they let me. In fact the lady checking me out said she might almost pay me to take it away ❤ I told her I’d gladly take her up on that offer any day!!

So the pictures you are missing from the rest of that room are ribbon, yarn, thread, patterns, paper crafts, and more. It’s like a mini craft store in there! They even have a sewing machine!

More on my thrifty shopping later – this isn’t the last Blue Ridge Hospice post and I can promise you that 😉

Love Always,

J

A Pocket Redo :)

27 Jul

Before you look at the picture I’m about to show you – I have these jean shorts that I bought at a consignment store. The pockets hang out of the jeans and it drives me insane!! You are probably wondering why I bought them then, so I’ll go ahead and explain the whole story. I’m tiny. End of story.

Lol – just kidding. So I wear youth size clothes because I’m really petite and even though I’m a Mom, none of the women’s clothes fit my body at all  – nor do they look anywhere near appealing. So I shop in the youth section. Finding something that fits me well, isn’t childish looking, and especially with shorts – aren’t TOO short is a tough battle. These jean shorts are mostly worn for painting, doing work outside, and being lazy around the house. I don’t wear them out but I still wanted a pair that fit nicely so picked these up thinking they would be perfect.

The pockets kill me. I flip them up under my jeans but they always fall back down so I finally decided to fix them myself.

I pinned where I wanted to sew and set the sewing machine to one of my favorite stitches. It looks like the sixth stitch on the first row:

Then I took my scissors and cut off the extra fabric on the bottom and TADA:

My shorts are no longer driving me crazy and ready to get some work done 😉

New Listings – Get Em’ While Their Hott!

11 Feb

I love new listings!! I wish it was easier to post new listing though.. but anyways! I have a few new things listed in my shop on etsy. A special thanks to my husband for helping me out with pictures since I’m disabled 😉 lol.

A creamy white adult sized blanket!

An adorable baby boy blanket!

A blue scarf!

A maroon scarf!

A blue & brown infinity scarf!

I love new things! Right now I am in the middle of a white infinity scarf, a maroon infinity scarf, a mocha infinity scarf for my sister, and another blue & brown one like the one listed above! I also have a teal blanket almost completed for an amazing friend 😀

My Mom and I have been crocheting like crazy people since it seems like this winter is going to be cut short. Crocheting in the heat just isn’t as much fun for some crazy reason 😉 haha.

So stick around! I should have new listings next week to show off too – if you want to check out my etsy store click the link here – Daydreaming Gifts!

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J
