Classtastic!

12 Feb

I know that’s a corny headline but it’s all I could come up with 😉 Work with me here!! ❤ So now that I’ve been taking this art class for a few weeks and I’m getting in a groove, I picked a picture I’ve been dying to draw and since my teacher thinks I’d do well with colored pencils I knew this was one the to start attempting color with:

photo (40)

I found it on pinterest and immediately tagged in my “Pictures to Draw” board. I think it’s seriously stunning!!

photo (39)

The first week I did really lightly guidelines to get the basic shape down.

photo (38)

Then when I got home I did the basic hatching of colors to give it some life!

photo (35)

Week 2 in class I finally got to play with mixing colors and finding the right tones to create the end color I was looking for. This is phase one of that!

photo (36)

Week three Is more work and more guide lining with color the rest of the hair. I’m hoping to finish off the ends and start on the top of her hair next week! ❤

So here’s to my goal of going back and taking classes and proof that it’s great for someone who is creative to never give up on learning new things!!

What are you working on these days? Are you trying something new too?

A Little White, A Lot of Color!

10 Dec

This weekend I had a high school reunion with one of my best friends! We spent the entire weekend shopping, crafting, catching up and creating a masterpiece 🙂

043

This girl rocks my world! She is always up for a good time and ready to get crafty in seconds 🙂 We are so much alike that it’s scary sometimes but my favorite thing about her is that she always surprises me! Just when I think I know her so well, she shocks me with more personality and drive. Catching up was way past due and I am so thankful we found the time to make it happen.
012

During our shopping trip I bought a new item for my craft show table to display my new necklaces. Nothing shows off what you make than seeing it worn and I felt like this necklace needed that. I’m excited for this new addition to my table 🙂

011

We also bought a pack of 80’s glam sharpies. We love color and we decided to try a project with them! You’ll get to see the whole thing soon but for now I’ll just give you this as a sneak peak 😉

Another sneak peak is what’s about to happen! There is going to be a huge change in my blogging life. I am now starting a blog with Leslie! We are still working on getting it set and ready – so it won’t be open until January but I am so excited I couldn’t not share!

The Underestimated Mom will still be updated but more like two – three times a week instead of almost daily. Most of my time will be spent making articles for A Charming Twist. If you are interested in keeping up with Leslie & I head on over there now or starting in January.

We will also be doing guest posts so if you think you have something awesome you want to share that’s craft, fashion, food, or home decor related – you’d be the perfect fit for our blog!

Lot’s of fun new things going on!

Hope you are as excited as I am 😉

Cork Preview

29 Sep

So I’ve been looking up fun things to do with corks and got a start on them yesterday. Thought I’d share them with you today 🙂

A cork wreath! I still haven’t mastered how I’m going to finish this but it was fun to finally get started on it 🙂 Brian thinks I should color or spray paint the corks when I’m done to give it a little color boost – he thinks the cork color is boring. I could definitely see these being cute if they were green and red or maybe even blue just for kicks and giggles.

This is a cork Christmas tree ornament 🙂 This too is going to get some color to spice it up a little!!

I really liked how this one turned out so I might be making a few more! What do you think?

I have a list of other cute ideas I’d love to try and since I have a ridiculous amount of corks – this could get interesting 😉

Thanks for stopping by!

I did it again – Framing It Up!

16 Aug

Another one of Saturday’s projects: Frames!

I started out by picking out what paint and paper I wanted for each one:

I always pick out the paint and paper first so that I know if I have the right color to match. I have about six other sheets I wanted to try but I’ll be running to the store today to pick out the perfect paint colors!

Then it was prime time! To make the paint colors really pop the exact color they are shown always use a primer white paint or the tan of the wood will change the shade of the paint.

I decided to focus on these while the others dried. I picked two neutral and a bright blue!

This gray needs another top coat layer – some paint colors need more coats in than others.

I picked some gray paper that had pops of color. I think I want to use this same paper again and do one of the pop colors as the frame!

This white one is my favorite one so far! I loooove how vibrant the green is and how the white frame pops out the white pattern.

A close up of the awesome pattern!

And last but not least the blue set! I can just picture this in a little boys room 🙂

This paper also has a couple options for color choices!

Which one was your favorite?

Next week I’ll have some more frames with some new colors to share! These frames will also be on etsy by tomorrow so if you are interested in one of them let me know – I can reserve it for you!

A Get it Done Moment

1 Aug

When you come across a couple uninterrupted hours and a nice day outside you have to take it for all it’s worth! I packed up my painting supplies and went to work:

Who’s ready to get messy!? I am!! With three separate frames and two solid frames I was ready to go to town!

It took about two solid coats of white for me to be happy with them primed and bring on some color!

I went with three totally different colors in hopes of getting some variety. Bright red, light purple, and a POP of blue 🙂

Then I added some decorative paper to give it a little fun. They are all ready to be hung for some fun wall art or I can add letters/initials to each one to give them some personal love ❤

A fun purple with multiple colored polka dots is a fun way to spice up any little girls room or even a hallway that needs a little life!

These are definitely a statement piece! A great way to brighten up any room that’s ready for some fun – maybe a family room or playroom? I could even see these in a kitchen 🙂

This one is my absolute favorite. This bright pop of blue brings out the leaf design in the paper and what can I say – I am crazy about a bright blue! I could see this in my bedroom, bathroom, or even my hallway! I might even add hooks on the bottom to hang keys on.

Keep an eye out – these will be in my Etsy shop soon!

Which one is your favorite and why?

Bring On The Boy!

25 Jul

Hey everyone! I’ve been switching up my crafts from Pink to Blue! Now that Emma’s Birthday crafts are done I’m doing a project for a friend of my dads:

So let’s Bring on the Boy crafts! I’m making frames like I did for Emma’s name and decided to pick a gray pattern for the background color. I think the really dark blue goes great with a gray and for the initials I’ll be using a lighter blue to go with the theme of the little boys room.

The great thing about these frames is you can easily switch out the paper in the back if you are ever trying to change a rooms color theme. Because I use vinyl for the letters you can peel them off and switch the paper out in minutes! Say in a few years this little boy is getting bigger and they choose yellow walls instead of light blue – add a pattern with a yellow color in the paper and it sticks with the color scheme!

Along with the frames I’m also making a list of other things but yesterday I started working on the burp cloths and activity blanket. I don’t know what it is about this fabric but I think it’s perfect for little boys!

I’ll be adding more posts of what I’m making – along with the grand finale of the finished gift basket so stay tuned!

My Favorite Dress – Mini Sized!

26 Jun

Hey everyone! I finished the dress I was working yesterday 🙂 While I was making it I realized I needed another fabric quarter srap so there’s a bright new color you weren’t expecting!

Since it was my first time making this type of dress and I wasn’t using a pattern I’ve already thought of multiple ways I could make it differently or better. I’m happy with how it came out but I’m wanting to have another try at it to see if i can make it even better!

Love my little girl trying it on even though it’s two sizes too big 😉 maybe next year she’ll fit in!

Taking Advice Never Hurts!

6 Mar

Thanks to some wonderful advice from my readers I started small with some of the tasks I was facing. Apparently starting small worked miracles because not only did I get what I wanted accomplished – I surprised myself and got a heck of a lot done!

For those of you new readers: I have been having major problems accomplishing things around this household due to the fact that I don’t have my own space away from everything. All the spaces available to me that I had to work were either in view of all the other chores I needed to do (completely distracting me), or in the middle of our families common area. Little 2-year-old hands and questions, plus my husbands TV and video games were the entertainment that kept me accomplishing anything!

I had recently taken over my parents dining room while they were out-of-town and quickly realized what I needed. A space to call my own, away from TV’s, dishes, laundry, toys, 2-year-old hands, chores, projects, or anything that moved really. (I’m easily distracted – don’t make fun of me!) It was a huge table of success and probably the biggest DUH moment I ever had. I’ve never given myself any place to really call my own except for my side of the bed. I share everything!

Here is the nice big old space I had at my parents place:

So in case you didn’t know: My dilemma is making something like this – happen in my little apartment. The advice that I got from a super intelligent reader was to Start Small. Okay this shouldn’t be a problem for me but apparently it was! I think and dream wayyyy to big to be boxed in the small category. Since the apartment is a completely open space – the only closed off areas are the two bedrooms, the bathroom, and the storage (which is a disaster of a chore needing tlc). Emma’s room and the bathroom were out of the question. That leaves me with my room and the storage. There’s no way I can work in the storage so my room it is!

Funniest thing ever – there is a little desk in my room tucked away in a corner piled high with … crap. So again – I start small. I cleared off the top of the desks, headed to the drawers, and bam! It’s like a brand new desk ready for work right? No. Not exactly. It’s tucked in a corner that’s completely unworkable. I’d never function there. I sat on my bed and decided it was time to re-arrange the room anyways. I have a big old habit of rearranging furniture every couple of months and this was way past due time.

I decided then – If I am going to move all these pieces of furniture I am cleaning out all of them.

Under the bed – cleaned out.

Side Tables – pretty and clean!

Dresser – Clean and rearranged! Love it!

Next step was moving everything around to put my desk in the prime location. In-between the windows!! I absolutely love natural light and this room is the one place during the day that gets the most gorgeous sun – so why not take advantage of it, right? Oh I did! I moved that sucker right in between two huge windows and set up shop.

Now this is where starting small really means the most to me. No I can’t fit my entire craft collection in here – I have way to much stuff and a huge table that would never make it. So I left all my crafting things where they are in the “dining room”. I moved all my books, paperwork, computer, camera, and small things in here. I also got rid of a pile of things that were in our box in our hallway that keeps bills, recipes, and miscellaneous things in it.

Welcome to my new office! A huge part of my crafting life now dedicated to my own space. So who cares if I have to craft next to all my chores – at least I’m getting all my busy work done away from all the chaos!

I’ll have to take a picture during the daylight so you can see how gorgeous it is in here 😛 Oh Oh! Check out my clean drawers. I don’t think these drawers have been cleaned since we moved in here (three years ago).

Ahhh I love organization! I will say that doing projects like this just makes me want to go full-out crazy and makeover the entire room! I’ve had this color palate in my head for a while now. I’m slowly transforming this room into something similar to this:

Not necessarily that bedspread – just the color theme! Here’s another color theme example:

I’ve pretty much already headed in that direction! My wall colors are the second color down, my comforter is the light gray and black, and my bedside lamps are the first yellow color. I want to paint my side tables white and line them with some sort of yellow patterned paper or vinyl like this:

Then I want to paint my desk white and line the drawers the same way.

I’m also in search for a thrift store dresser. I love ours – but it’s a family  hand me down and it comes in a huge set so there’s no way I’d want to paint it. But since I’m changing all my other furniture white – I want a white dresser too! So I’ll be on the look out for a cheap new one!

Then to top off my room changing – art. I want something on these bare walls and something much prettier to hang above my desk 😉

Maybe something like this?

But maybe framed since we aren’t living here forever and I’d like to take it with me 😛

Well enough daydreaming for now! I’ll keep on the look out for things to upgrade around my room and then maybe we could do a room by room budget friendly update! ❤ Now I’m really dreaming! As long as I start small – these should all be do-able things!

Note to self: Listen to all advice given by amazing readers 😉

Thanks for stopping by!

What got you interested in crafting?

I took a 3 day class learning to make handwoven baskets and I was hooked, that was over 25 years ago. I did craft fairs and art shows with my baskets. From there I went to doing flowers for parties, weddings and events. I have always enjoyed making wreaths the most. There are endless ideas for displaying and decorating with them.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

By far the wreaths where I am asked to create from my customer’s souvenirs or “memories”. I love creating a one of a kind wreath from items that customers send me. More than anything, I am humbled that they trust me to handle their memories. For instance, this year Chirstmas (2011) a lady asked me to create a wreath for her to hang at Christmas. Her mother passed away the previous Christmas and had a wonderful angel ornament collection. She sent me 3 beautiful vintage angel ornaments from her mother’s collection. It truly was a moving experience to touch these, to be trusted to take care of them and to be given free creative design of the wreath.

After that I enjoy making the Disney wreaths. They are alot of fun. I love it when customer’s send me their Disney trip items to make a wreath. Their Mickey Hat, pressed penny, picture of them with their favorite character, confetti from the parade, popped balloon, ticket to get into the park, airline ticket, room key, it is like opening a present!

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

The reason I choose this name, is that I use to be a wedding planner. Everyone tells me that I have a sparkling personality and it goes with my sparkle eyeliner. The Vienna comes from the town I live in. When I was trying to think of a name for my wedding planning business, I was stumped. I talked to my sister and without missing a beat, she said Vienna Sparkle. I liked the name and it is easy to remember. The city of Vienna is known for their exceptional theater, opera, classical music and fine arts.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

Oh wow, that is hard. My mind is swirling with ideas! Past, Present and Themed Wreaths, Sparkle and Color Wreaths. My shop would be filled with alot of color and sparkle! I love those two elements. Every inch of wall would be covered with wreaths of all colors, designs and sparkle. It would be a warm and inviting environment. Someplace that would set a spark inside the person looking at them.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

I made a Christmas Wreath that was over 4 feet in diameter. It was hung over a huge fireplace mantle. I had to make the wreath as light as possible and yet it had to be able to be used for years to come. It was too large to ship (expense wise), so I delivered the wreath in person. It was a 13 hour round trip delivery.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I want to make more treasured memory wreaths for people. I feel so fulfilled when they write me and tell me that the wreath was more than they could imagine. I want increase the inventory in my store. More than anything I want people to know who I am, what I can do and that they have a way to preserve/display their memories in different way.

What inspires you to be crafty?

My customers! They are so grateful and are more impressed with their wreath in person. I feel so good, when I gave my customers more than they envisioned.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

My detail. My design. My use of color and how I balance those colors. I treat each wreath as if it were to be hung in my home and make sure that nothing is overlooked.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

A robot that could take my pictures, edit them, post my descriptions, do my tags and pricing! I want to keep making wreaths non-stop.
