Getting Down and Dirty

23 Jan

Alright this post is not going to be the typical post. I have a few things on my mind that I felt like sharing because I know I can’t be the only one that feels this way!

I love new beginnings. I love the feeling of starting something that could make a huge difference in my families lives. There’s something about the way a new adventure in life can really spark a sense of hope in someone.

I guess you could say I’m a new beginnings junky! When I notice that I’m getting in a rut of things I get frustrated, bummed, and get antsy.

Antsy is where the magic happens. I can’t stop searching for that perfect thing even though I have no idea what I’m looking for somehow inspiration always finds me! I find that next new thing and I go nuts researching it until I feel ready.

When I reach that moment I tend to search and destroy. Which for me means rearrange, clean and organize every single thing I can think of that might in any way have any slight thing to do with my new inspiration. Okay some of them don’t but it’s super fun!

Then I make a notebook full of lists and goals and preparations and steps to succeed.

I spend a few weeks trucking along with this wonderful, why didn’t I think of this earlier?! mood. Then I get stuck in a rut and we start back at square one.

I am officially noting to everyone that this is my new problem. Who knows, maybe one of these days my next new thing will actually pan out and satisfy my crazy need for new happenings in my life!

Does anyone else feel the same way? What do you do about it?

My Little Super Hero

9 Jul

Emma beans has been watching a super hero show called Word Girl and has completely fallen in love πŸ™‚ After “flying” around the room and singing that she was a super hero I decided to ask her if she wanted some super girl hero swag. She looked at me like I was nuts! Then I said, “Emma would you like me to make you a super hero cape?” Her response?

001Giddy excitement πŸ™‚ After looking at a few YouTube tutorials – I knew this was going to be a piece of cake!

004I measured my little girl, made a template with the sizes on it and got my materials out and ready!

005First step was to draw out the template on the material. Since this is just play clothes I wasn’t exact in my measuring or drawing.

007Before I cut out the second piece I made sure this was going to fit!\

008Perfection!

009After I cut out the second piece I ran it under the iron real quick (remember it doesn’t need to be perfect! It’s play clothes!)

010Next I took a piece of felt (since it doesn’t fray) and used a bowl to cut a circle.

011I hopped on the computer and printed out a letter e. I chose a lowercase because I thought it would look better with the curves of the circle! (Plus it’s easier to place in the middle!)

012I put my black felt under the letter e, pinned it, and cut it out. I removed the paper e and then hand stitched the felt e onto the circle. It might be easier to use the sewing machine instead of hand stitch but I was too lazy to change out the bobbin πŸ˜‰

013Next I put the circle in the middle of the cape and did a quick sew line around the circle. Not perfect at all but again it’s play clothes!

014I put the two pieces back to back and did a quick sew all along the edges leaving a small part at the bottom to flip it inside out. Ran it under the iron real quick, and did a fun stitch at the bottom to seal that end in.

015Most people would sew all the way around for a finished look but this is supposed to be a quick easy project so just finishing of the end was good enough for me!

016Next I put snaps on the ends to keep the cape on. Obviously I butchered the first snap so I did a second πŸ˜‰

017

I like the thick straps in front with the snap – something about string just drives me crazy!

018And Tada! We have a little super hero in our house! Emma is crazy in love with her cape πŸ™‚ Her one disappoint was that she thought once she had a cape – she’d be able to fly!! Poor thing was a little flustered but she wouldn’t take it off all day!

Snow Day!!

29 Jan

001

The first time we’ve gotten to play with snow this year! Emma was so excited so could barely contain herself. Every time she’d look outside and see the snow falling she’d BEG me to let her go out and build a snowman!! Since we didn’t have snow clothes for the little girl I care for we had to wait until after she went home.

003

After running around the deck in pure joy of the snow for a good 15 minutes I got the shovel and a bowl out so she could attempt to build a snowman. The snow was to dry to pack so it didn’t quite work out as planned but she had a blast trying anyways!

004

There was our little snowman attempt!! Every time we put a new layer of snow on it just toppled all over the sides so you can’t even really tell it was supposed to be a snow man but she proudly shows it off to everyone who will come look out the window and see it!

002

I love that little girl!!

Hope for those of you who got hit by the snow storm enjoyed it as much as someone else I know πŸ˜‰

Wasted Space Not So Wasted Anymore!

8 Jan

Emma’s closet has been only used for storage since she was born. We have a big chest of drawers for her and since her clothes are so tiny I would just fold them up and put them in there. We also had the changing table drawers for sheets and blankets so there was really never a need to hang up her clothes.

037

This resulted in using the closet to put things she wasn’t using in! For a while I’ve wanted to do something differently and I finally got the kick in the butt to change things up around here πŸ™‚

038

Emma’s closet has this nook inside of it that I’ve been dying to make a little reading spot out of! So while I was giving the closet a useful makeover I decided to make this part a little place to hide out for Emma.

060

On one side she has her spot to sit and read with her books.

056

The other side is her stuffed animal pile and puzzles on top of the shelf. Sometimes she’ll crawl into the pile of animals and hide out!

054

The rest of her closet got organized and is finally be used for it’s main purpose!! For the past few mornings she’s had a blast picking out her outfits not that she can see them all!

050

When it gets quiet around here I know just where to find her!

Now I need to make a special spot for me to go hide and get things done πŸ˜‰ I wonder if Emma would let me work on my blogging in my closet?

Love Always,

J

Christmas At 3

1 Jan

This year Emma had 5 different Christmases!! That’s what happens when you have a huge family and you live close to all of them πŸ™‚ We actually missed out on one family Christmas this year so there could have been six! Whew. So instead of splitting them all up into different posts I’ll just give you the quick peak at a few of them.

005

Little miss too excited to wait two minutes for me to get a pick before she saw all the presents! She was so excited!

018

This year we let her play with each toy after she opened it. Needless to say it took from 9am-4pm the first day!

033

Emma’s dressy outfit πŸ™‚

035

By Round 3 of Christmas she was aΒ professionalΒ at opening presents!

031

Brian and I enjoying watching her open presents instead of having to help her like last year πŸ˜‰

030

Chick Fil A treats for Christmas this year! I had to share mine of course πŸ˜‰

026

A beautiful mist of snow just in time for Christmas this year.

Christmas Tree Shopping!

17 Dec

There is nothing better than Christmas shopping with a little one.

028

035

037

038

We had a blast finding the perfect one!

Usually we get Hot Chocolate or Caramel Apple Cider while we are Christmas Tree shopping but this year it was nice and warm!! I think Emma enjoyed the warm weather.

Do you have any tree shopping traditions? I’d love to hear them!

What Are You Doing!?

14 Dec

Today I am doing finishing touches to make sure I’m all prepped for my show tomorrow!

photo (27)

These are pieces of wood I spray painted with chalkboard paint to make price signs for the show. I love how bright they are and how they stand out. I also love that I don’t have to tag price EACH item I’ve made. I’ve tried many different ways to tag price my items and realized that all of them take WAY to long and I could have made more items for my show instead of wasting time tagging each and every single thing.

il_fullxfull.256405979

These are the kinds of tags I was trying to use. I had to write out each tag and use string to tie to each item. It was exhausting and frustrating. Another kind i used were sticky price tags which I hated. They either leave sticky messes on your items or they fall off and are nowhere to be found which result in a, “how much is this!?”

After going through all that I realized I didn’t mind people asking me how much things were. It actually seemed to be the conversation starter and gave me a chance to explain the process of making my items and that I do custom orders as well. After that I tried to come up with a different way to price my items – which resulted in the chalkboard paint boards. Now my prices are easy to be seen but if someone really wanted to talk to me or ask me my prices I was ready and available πŸ™‚

What are you working on today? Leave a comment and let me know or share a link to show me what you are doing!

Pepe Le Pew!

12 Dec

20121008111600!Pepe_Le_Pew
It’s not exactly what it sounds like. I was talking to my mom the other day about how I’m not so peppy anymore and the entire time I was talking she said she couldn’t think of anything but Pepe Le Pew..

I had a moment of clarification this weekend while my high school best friend was in town. I used to be easily excited, the first person to jump up and down for joy with good news, and always smiling. I miss that person I used to be. Then I looked at my mom and said, “My peppy went le pew..”

Who knows exactly when I lost it but one thing is for sure that I’m determined to get it back! How am I going to do that? Here’s how:

  • I am going to do sweet things for my husband and child for no reason. My favorite thing to do was make others smile and surprise them in some way – so I’m going to start doing that again!!
  • Lately when something awesome happens to me I tell my husband and my mom and that’s it. Who doesn’t love good news!? So now I am going to start telling all my friends as well and have them tell me when good things happen to them. Talking about good things instead of bad things is just what we all need.
  • Spending a little more time in the morning making myself look good is something I loved. It made me feel like I could tackle the rest of the day because I was proud of myself to start out with.
  • Not feeling guilty about doing what I want to is something that started when I became a Mom. I am the kind of person who always puts everyone before myself but repeatedly Brian tells me to put myself first. He’s right – so I am going to follow through with it and do a few things for myself. I have a feeling that’s going to be a major self-esteem booster!

We all need a little Pep in our life, and a little less Pepe Le Pew πŸ˜‰

A Little White, A Lot of Color!

10 Dec

This weekend I had a high school reunion with one of my best friends! We spent the entire weekend shopping, crafting, catching up and creating a masterpiece πŸ™‚

043

This girl rocks my world! She is always up for a good time and ready to get crafty in seconds πŸ™‚ We are so much alike that it’s scary sometimes but my favorite thing about her is that she always surprises me! Just when I think I know her so well, she shocks me with more personality and drive. Catching up was way past due and I am so thankful we found the time to make it happen.
012

During our shopping trip I bought a new item for my craft show table to display my new necklaces. Nothing shows off what you make than seeing it worn and I felt like this necklace needed that. I’m excited for this new addition to my table πŸ™‚

011

We also bought a pack of 80’s glam sharpies. We love color and we decided to try a project with them! You’ll get to see the whole thing soon but for now I’ll just give you this as a sneak peak πŸ˜‰

Another sneak peak is what’s about to happen! There is going to be a huge change in my blogging life. I am now starting a blog with Leslie! We are still working on getting it set and ready – so it won’t be open until January but I am so excited I couldn’t not share!

The Underestimated Mom will still be updated but more like two – three times a week instead of almost daily. Most of my time will be spent making articles for A Charming Twist. If you are interested in keeping up with Leslie & I head on over there now or starting in January.

photo (24)

She said she was a dragon princess and ran off to play – needless to say that necklace came back with a little pizza sauce and dogΒ slobberΒ on it. I don’t think anyone will be using this necklace but her πŸ˜‰ thank goodness I made more!!

002

Now for the part about you! I’d love to see what my readers are making and what better way to get to know you than for you to comment below with a link to your blog post about what you are crafting today!? So bring it on readers!! Let’s start a crafty revolution!

P.S. I found this tutorial off pinterest (of course) and since she explains it WAY better than me – I’ll just let you run off to her site and check it out if you are interested in trying to make a necklace like this: Tampa Bay Crochet
