Prepping Payton’s Room!

1 Jul

It’s officially Six Weeks until Payton is due for her arrival and the preparation for the nursery has begun!

photo 4

We are going through all of the old things we saved from Emma and sorting through the keepers 🙂 I am so glad we kept everything.

photo 5

And since she is going to have a life long amount of hand me downs we plan on purchasing her a few new items that are strictly just hers!

photo 3

I’m pretty impressed with our lack of planning and the fact that they will be less than a month apart in clothing size! Not only are they going to be the same season but if they are similar in size, all the clothes will be perfect!

photo 2

Her drawers are now filled with necessities and I feel like if she came at any point we are set. We did get one major gift from the parents and in laws that is due for arrival this week! There is going to be a glider rocker chair in this corner.

Sorry it’s kind of a dark picture! I’m so excited to get this chair in, I have a feeling I’ll be spending a lot of memorable moments there 🙂

Furniture Makeover: Corner Cabinet

28 Jul

Hey everyone! I am so excited to finally share the corner cabinet makeover!!

002 beforeandafter

This cabinet has been a pass down in my family and I loved where it fit my home but it stood out like a sore thumb! Sure the bright white looks clean (minus the amount of stuff is in it) and it doesn’t look bad but I wanted it to blend a little more. Our kitchen and hallway area is two toned. A Dark tan and a light tan so I wanted to use both of those aspects in this piece and I wanted it to be fun!

IMG_4903
I took it outside to get it ready! A quick sand, wipe down, and removed the shelves to paint separately.

IMG_4912
I painted the inside first (since it’s the most awkward) and let it drive so I could put the shelves in with ease.

IMG_4915
Next step was painting the rest of it and letting this dry really good since I would be putting tape on top of it. If you don’t let it dry overnight you can risk the chance of the tape pulling up some of the fresh paint.

IMG_4925
I taped off where I wanted to paint, and did another quick paint using the same color (this keeps the colors from bleeding through the tape so you can get a great straight line!

IMG_4926
Once that was dry I went over it with the lighter tan and peeled the tape off while it was still wet.

IMG_4928
The lines turned out GREAT! I was really happy with the finished look – especially the top!

IMG_4930
Let it dry again and then you are good to go!

IMG_4931
Now it’s time to fill it with goodies and keep it nice and organized this time 😉

Wasted Space Not So Wasted Anymore!

8 Jan

Emma’s closet has been only used for storage since she was born. We have a big chest of drawers for her and since her clothes are so tiny I would just fold them up and put them in there. We also had the changing table drawers for sheets and blankets so there was really never a need to hang up her clothes.

037

This resulted in using the closet to put things she wasn’t using in! For a while I’ve wanted to do something differently and I finally got the kick in the butt to change things up around here 🙂

038

Emma’s closet has this nook inside of it that I’ve been dying to make a little reading spot out of! So while I was giving the closet a useful makeover I decided to make this part a little place to hide out for Emma.

060

On one side she has her spot to sit and read with her books.

056

The other side is her stuffed animal pile and puzzles on top of the shelf. Sometimes she’ll crawl into the pile of animals and hide out!

054

The rest of her closet got organized and is finally be used for it’s main purpose!! For the past few mornings she’s had a blast picking out her outfits not that she can see them all!

050

When it gets quiet around here I know just where to find her!

Now I need to make a special spot for me to go hide and get things done 😉 I wonder if Emma would let me work on my blogging in my closet?

Love Always,

J

New Shelves!

8 Oct

So most of you know that I got my new storage shelves in this past weekend and spent this weekend putting them together and checking out how I’m going to use them!

I ordered three ClosetMaid cube shelves to use as storage in the studio room as well as to put on the table to use for craft shows. It took me about 45 minutes to put one of this little shelf together. Mainly because I don’t read instructions – I skim them, which results in having to pull things apart and try again!

Once I put it together I was so giddy I couldn’t stand it! They are so cute and each shelf holds two baby blankets perfectly! After putting one together, I got so excited that I decided to go ahead and put my table layout together to see what it would look like at the craft show. After setting up my first table I came to the conclusion that I’ll be using two for the show and the third one will stay home to store other supplies 🙂

This is the first trial set up for the show. I’m editing the hangers that hold the infinity scarves and the blankets and pillows laying in front of the new self will be off to the other side. Once I get the second table set up I’ll show you how it’s going to look! The second shelf will be holding the hand painted frames I make. I love how it’s turning out 🙂

Thanks for stopping by!

How to Restore Old Furniture

6 May

Hello There!

I’ve started my bedroom makeover that I’ve always dreamed of having. Since we are on a tight budget things are going to happen slowly but surely! Yesterday I took our side tables out and gave them a little touch up to get started. Restoring old furniture has become one of my favorite things to do to really make a difference in a room on a tight budget. Instead of spending a fortune buying new furniture to replace what you have, why not give it a little makeover instead and save some money?

I took these two side tables given to us from my mother-in-law and decided to make them pop a little more!

My goal for this room is to slowly transition everything into a black, gray, and white color scheme and have pops of yellow throughout. These two side tables completely blend in except for the fact that my two lamps are making a statement! They each also have a little wear and tear on them.

You can see here that the handles are a little scratched up as well as a few other places. So I cleaned out the side tables and took them outside for a little sanding. Please note – you probably shouldn’t go through your husbands side table to clean it out without asking him. Luckily, all I found was video game things and change 😛 Gotta love my hubby!

There are two ways you can sand furniture. You can hand sand it with a sand block or use a palm sander. I chose a palm sander because it’s faster but for the intricate parts of table like the drawer you are going to need a sand block. Since this side table had only been painted once there wasn’t layers upon layers to sand so a quick light sand is all you need. When something is painted previously with a gloss or there are obvious layers of paint then you are going to want to use a heavier sheet of sand paper or heavier sand block in order to make the process of sanding easier on you.

As you can see I didn’t take off the entire layer of paint. That’s not necessary – it’s just important to get off the top gloss and give the paint somewhere to hold onto when you paint it. If you decide not to sand and just paint as it is then the first time you scratch the paint or nick it a little it’s going to peel a good chunk off of your furniture. Paint needs something to hold on to in order to really stick.

Here comes the fun part – the first layer of paint! Your first layer is never going to look good. Especially when you are painting over a dark surface but it’s okay! Give it a nice little layer and let it dry for a couple of hours. If you are impatient like I am, find something to do to keep busy until it dries – in my case I painted the second shelf and the drawers!

You don’t always have to paint the entire drawer. I wanted to paint the inside because I plan on putting shelf liner in it to make it pop when you open the drawer, so I wanted to make sure the rest of the inside of the drawer looked pretty too!

Once you have let everything dry you can go back and do the second coat of painting. A hard lesson that I have figured out is to let the second coat dry over night. If you are like me – you will want to put it all together and put it back where it was to see the finished project and be proud of yourself for accomplishing it! Don’t.. The paint will feel dry but it’s still wet underneath. If you put the drawers back in and let it sit the paint will try to dry and end up sticking to whatever it’s touching. Which means you won’t be able to open the drawer and if you do – you might be damaging the paint job you just worked so hard at finishing.

Once its dried over night it’s ready to be used! I’m really excited about the white transformation! My next step to finishing these babies up is to by shelf/drawer liner to put in the drawers and the back panel of the cubby. I’m looking for a yellow pattern that will go along with the lamps but I’m having trouble finding exactly what I’m looking for so I’ll keep searching and wait until I find what I’m looking for!

It definitely gives it the POP of white that I was looking for 🙂

When you are a person like I am, that changes their mind about what they want, what they like, and their favorite color – you really should be thinking about the most budget friendly options. I change my mind so much that it’s probably best to keep all the furniture I have and just keep repainting it until I’m happy with the outcome!

The next thing I am going to attempt for this room is a handmade headboard! I’ll be searching Pinterest for brilliant ideas and budget friendly tips 😛

Thanks everyone for stopping by!

Play Space Step One Complete!

22 Mar

I told you this would happen fast 😉

For those of you who haven’t read my blog I wrote a post the other day here: Play Space Makeover about what I was hoping to do with Emma’s play space area.

Well it only took a day and I already have the easy half of it complete! Check it out:

I bought the cabinet and bins last night and stayed up late to set it up! I love the way it looks and I’m happy about the height of it. Emma played with it this morning and she is at perfect viewing and reaching height of the books. Of course they are all over the floor right now but I’ll try not to complain about that 😉

Something I’m super excited about that I did not expect is that she pulls out the bin halfway, pulls out the toy she wants, and pushes it back. I thought for sure she’d pull the whole bin out and dump the entire thing on the floor! This may just make our place a little cleaner. The next step I want to do for the bins is to put white vinyl pictures of the items that are in the boxes on the outside so Emma will learn where things belong and we can start a clean up routine!

The toy chest in this next picture is not going to be there but I did it more for a visual:

We are going to be building a little desk right there. We’ll be using white shelving board to create a custom desk that will fit along the length of the wall with a little side table at the end closest to the chair. I think I’m going to be able to fit a few of the floor toys (like the doll house in the bottom right corner) under the desk so that it’s not taking up extra floor space but it’s still accessible.

Thanks to my dad for being an amazing custom building fiend, he’s teaching me what I need to know about building custom pieces. We bought some foamboard and we are going to cut a template out to see what it will look like when we finish! As soon as we get that completed I’ll do another post so you can see it all coming together and then we’ll be buying the materials and getting it ready. While I’m waiting on that step I’ve been keeping my eyes out for little desk chairs that I can fix up like this I found on Craigslist:

The one she is selling is pink so I might paint it back to white but we’ll see 😀

What do you think of the cabinet and bins? Have you thought of any cool ways to store big floor toys? I’d love to hear what you think!

Taking Advice Never Hurts!

6 Mar

Thanks to some wonderful advice from my readers I started small with some of the tasks I was facing. Apparently starting small worked miracles because not only did I get what I wanted accomplished – I surprised myself and got a heck of a lot done!

For those of you new readers: I have been having major problems accomplishing things around this household due to the fact that I don’t have my own space away from everything. All the spaces available to me that I had to work were either in view of all the other chores I needed to do (completely distracting me), or in the middle of our families common area. Little 2-year-old hands and questions, plus my husbands TV and video games were the entertainment that kept me accomplishing anything!

I had recently taken over my parents dining room while they were out-of-town and quickly realized what I needed. A space to call my own, away from TV’s, dishes, laundry, toys, 2-year-old hands, chores, projects, or anything that moved really. (I’m easily distracted – don’t make fun of me!) It was a huge table of success and probably the biggest DUH moment I ever had. I’ve never given myself any place to really call my own except for my side of the bed. I share everything!

Here is the nice big old space I had at my parents place:

So in case you didn’t know: My dilemma is making something like this – happen in my little apartment. The advice that I got from a super intelligent reader was to Start Small. Okay this shouldn’t be a problem for me but apparently it was! I think and dream wayyyy to big to be boxed in the small category. Since the apartment is a completely open space – the only closed off areas are the two bedrooms, the bathroom, and the storage (which is a disaster of a chore needing tlc). Emma’s room and the bathroom were out of the question. That leaves me with my room and the storage. There’s no way I can work in the storage so my room it is!

Funniest thing ever – there is a little desk in my room tucked away in a corner piled high with … crap. So again – I start small. I cleared off the top of the desks, headed to the drawers, and bam! It’s like a brand new desk ready for work right? No. Not exactly. It’s tucked in a corner that’s completely unworkable. I’d never function there. I sat on my bed and decided it was time to re-arrange the room anyways. I have a big old habit of rearranging furniture every couple of months and this was way past due time.

I decided then – If I am going to move all these pieces of furniture I am cleaning out all of them.

Under the bed – cleaned out.

Side Tables – pretty and clean!

Dresser – Clean and rearranged! Love it!

Next step was moving everything around to put my desk in the prime location. In-between the windows!! I absolutely love natural light and this room is the one place during the day that gets the most gorgeous sun – so why not take advantage of it, right? Oh I did! I moved that sucker right in between two huge windows and set up shop.

Now this is where starting small really means the most to me. No I can’t fit my entire craft collection in here – I have way to much stuff and a huge table that would never make it. So I left all my crafting things where they are in the “dining room”. I moved all my books, paperwork, computer, camera, and small things in here. I also got rid of a pile of things that were in our box in our hallway that keeps bills, recipes, and miscellaneous things in it.

Welcome to my new office! A huge part of my crafting life now dedicated to my own space. So who cares if I have to craft next to all my chores – at least I’m getting all my busy work done away from all the chaos!

I’ll have to take a picture during the daylight so you can see how gorgeous it is in here 😛 Oh Oh! Check out my clean drawers. I don’t think these drawers have been cleaned since we moved in here (three years ago).

Ahhh I love organization! I will say that doing projects like this just makes me want to go full-out crazy and makeover the entire room! I’ve had this color palate in my head for a while now. I’m slowly transforming this room into something similar to this:

Not necessarily that bedspread – just the color theme! Here’s another color theme example:

I’ve pretty much already headed in that direction! My wall colors are the second color down, my comforter is the light gray and black, and my bedside lamps are the first yellow color. I want to paint my side tables white and line them with some sort of yellow patterned paper or vinyl like this:

Then I want to paint my desk white and line the drawers the same way.

I’m also in search for a thrift store dresser. I love ours – but it’s a family  hand me down and it comes in a huge set so there’s no way I’d want to paint it. But since I’m changing all my other furniture white – I want a white dresser too! So I’ll be on the look out for a cheap new one!

Then to top off my room changing – art. I want something on these bare walls and something much prettier to hang above my desk 😉

Maybe something like this?

But maybe framed since we aren’t living here forever and I’d like to take it with me 😛

Well enough daydreaming for now! I’ll keep on the look out for things to upgrade around my room and then maybe we could do a room by room budget friendly update! ❤ Now I’m really dreaming! As long as I start small – these should all be do-able things!

Note to self: Listen to all advice given by amazing readers 😉

Thanks for stopping by!

Daily Life: The Updated Patio – New Patterns!

13 Apr

I just realized that I loaded all my new patio furniture pictures on my facebook page and didn’t write a post about it! I should be fired 😉 Oh wait, I’m my own boss .. hehe I love my job!

So here’s the new patterns, pillows, and cushions I bought!

Okay don’t laugh at me, I picked up two different size cushions, one is going back and being replaced 😉

Originally I planned my spot colors to be orange and red so they would really pop but after going to store after store and not finding anything lime green seemed to work for me 😉

Love Always,

J

Daily Life: Rearranging, Crafts, & SHOPPING!

7 Feb

Oh what a day it has been! And yes, I did it again 🙂 I rearranged this place like a crazy woman I thought I could make all this furniture work.. and I DID! We’ll just have to see if the husband approves when he gets home. Although I did a lot of couch lifting and moving and heavy side table shoving and sliding things are quite similar to the way they were before. Only a few things changed but I’m already loving my decisions and crossing my fingers B can at least handle it for a month, and then i’ll rearrange again 😀

So all that hard work made me hungry and we took a break then E and I made lunch and now she is laying on the couch wiggiling dancing while drinking her milk before nap time. Me? Oh I am typing this blog and planning my craftiness for the day 😀 I got so many good ideas some from family, friends, and my readers that I am going to try it all!! I still have two other ideas that I had bought the stuff for to try out that I can’t wait to do so we’ll see how many I do and what all I get done! I have a little craft rearranging to do now that I have more craft storage space but that won’t take long.

It’s only Monday and I am already EXCITED for the rest of the week 😀 Tomorrow I am dropping off E at Nana’s house and my mom and I are going SHOPPING! That’s right, this girl is going to finally spend her birthday and leftover Christmas money on things for herself!! We are going clothes shopping at this consignment store I am absolutely obsessed with! It’s called Plato’s Closet. They only take name brand clothes that are in perfect condition and sell them for half or less than half the price you would see in stores. Amazing deals!! Plus I haven’t bought clothes for myself since pregnancy and a few jeans after pregnancy.. this girl needs clothes. Nothing quite fits me right and I am ready to look smoking hott again 😉 or at least B thinks I am smoking hott!!

We are also stopping by Babies R Us to check out a toybin/chest something/anything to hold E’s toys that isn’t a hott pink bucket 😀 Something that goes with our furniture preferably and maybe even fun to look at!!! Haha super excited about that. Then of course there’s always a 90 percent chance I will find myself in a craft store! Which is why I am hoping to get lots done today so I know what I want to buy with the rest of my crafty money.

Well E is down for a nap, my music is playing on the surround sound, and I am dying to get crafty!! So I’ll fill you in later on what else this crazy mom gets done 😉

Love Always,

J

P.S. Thanks to all my readers, I hit 100 views the other day!! All of you reading is what’s keeping me writing/crafting. Love you!!!!
