We Come and We Go

6 Dec

As I was sitting down yesterday after an eventful exciting day with the girls, I realized I was so tired of putting off the things I love the most. I haven’t been crafting as much as used to, I haven’t been writing here as much as I’d love to, I haven’t taken care of myself because I am so busy taking care of everything else! It seems like I’ve been slowly realizing this as I’ve started putting me back in the front seat.

Recently I’ve pulled back out my yarn and hook and starting making things for myself instead of my etsy page. I had worked so hard on my etsy shop making things I thought people would want to buy that I wasn’t enjoying it anymore. I took some time to think about what I wanted to make for me or my family and the ideas started rolling in!

How many scarves and hats have I made and Emma didn’t even have a set of her own? She had outgrown all of hers and although Payton has been loving the previous one’s Emma passed down, it was about time Emma has a set of her own! I let her pick out some of the yarn I already had in stock and I couldn’t be more proud of my hard work!

Since we moved into this house we haven’t had a wreath on our door. I know it seems ridiculous to be upset about that, but that was one of the things I was looking forward to when we owned our own home. Three years and I hadn’t made one wreath for our own home!!

Now I am happy wreath on my door home owner! Granted it’s only one, but I do have a few more ideas in mind. I am so proud of the fact that I didn’t attempt to buy sixteen of these, stock up on premade ones, and buy shipping boxes with the intention of selling them, because honestly I don’t want to!

What I plan on making is a happy home! I hope you all will join in me in my process of finding what’s important for me and my family and enjoy us as we come and go. I might not be consistent on this blog, but I will be here when I can.

Putting it down!

14 Aug

This weekend I will be putting it down. The phone, the computer, the iPad, turning off the TV.

I will be putting it all down for her. She desperately needs more of Brian and I. We are changing our normal routine because she deserves our attention.

We want to be present in their lives so they know we are here when they need us, they are important, and that we love them.

With all the technology in this world, we have taught ourselves how to not be present. Our children more than ever need us to be present. So this weekend we are putting it down and it won’t be the last time I’m sure.

And some prepping for a DIY event!

Are You Taking Care Of You?

29 Jan

I can just hear my mom’s voice in my head. “You can’t take care of everyone else if you aren’t taking care of yourself.” She’s a genius.

So need to start doing this more often. It is definitely a MUST! Tired of letting myself be a pushover.

When your life is full of a list of things to do for everyone else, you tend to forget what you need. Last year I realized I was balancing too much and if I kept going at the rate I was, I was going to break. As much as that would hurt me, I was more worried about my family. Two little girls are dependent on me, and my husband – although he could do it on his own, he deserves someone who is there.

This year I made some major changes in my life. I hired help to get me through the work and dedicated that time back to my family. We are spending more time together and focusing on what’s really important in our lives. Each other.

This is not an easy thing to do so I gathered up some things to help you remind yourself how to get back to what’s really important in your life.

1. Find a schedule that works for you, not against you.

2.Β Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

3. Learn to say no graciously. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.

4. Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s fine to have a role model to look up to, but don’t beat yourself up trying to be them.

5. Worrying only takes up precious time. We can’t control everything, and we shouldn’t.

6. Enjoy the small moments and victories.

After all, these moments won’t last forever!

What do you do to refocus and take care of you?

I hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving! Today we are spending it in Alexandria with family. A lot has happened in the past year for my sister and I and I am so proud to be spending Thanksgiving at her house this year. We are finally grown ups and able to celebrate the holidays in our own homes. I’m also super thankful because I know her and her husband are going to make mouth watering food! I’ve never had a meal there that I didn’t love!

If you want to see updated pictures as thanksgiving goes along with my family, keep checking the instagram roll on the right of my blog ——->

Love you all!

Really Jenn… Already?!

19 Sep

I can’t believe I’m doing this already. It’s been day two of cold weather and I’m already seeing myself fall into the habits I had last winter πŸ™‚ Was it me who just said I loved fall weather in the last post? I must be crazy because I might love the weather, the sweatshirts, the hot chocolate, and the blankets, but there is a slight malfunction with my love fall weather that I hadn’t noticed before.

I’m glued to this couch.. problem – HUGE PROBLEM! In my joyful post about all the things I love about cold weather I seemed to have left out all the things that I don’t particularly like about cold weather. So here’s a make up post for things I don’t want to happen this year with cold weather!!!

My mood for the day directly resides in the fact that I accomplish something that I am proud of. That is not an easy task to do while glued to the couch πŸ˜› I’m starting to find myself getting what’s absolutely necessary done in the morning, getting hot chocolate, and hopping on the couch in my cozy little blanket.

Good news is that 99% of my work is on the computer which happily heats up my little legs. Bad news is laundry, dishwasher, cleaning, cooking, and even simple tasks like going to the bathroom seem terribly awful! Why oh why would I want to move from this amazing place I’ve created? Oh that’s right – because I have a child to take care of πŸ˜›

I’m starting to believe this weather is more of a love/hate relationship so instead of falling back into these old habits I am going to write down all the things I WILL get done each day whether I like it or not – and a few solutions to why I don’t like cold weather:

I’m going to take a steaming hot shower every morning, dry my hair, straighten my hair, and look presentable as many days of the week as I possibly can – because when it’s cold outside I refuse to get out of bed and then I look like a mess (I was going to say hot mess but there’s nothing hot about it nor is it hot outside).

I’m not going to let my pretty little bottom sit on the couch until I have accomplished all chores for that day. That way I have accomplished something and won’t feel like such a slob around here.

I’m going to do as much computer work as I can at night (when I enjoy writing the most anyways) so I can do all the above things in the morning without feeling like I’m running behind on my work!

I’m going to make sure I am making something warm to eat each day. Whether it’s baking or crock potting or something else. I absolutely love that baking in the oven heats up the house and eating warm food always warms me up! I am going to heat up this place and make sure that I haven’t given up on cooking all together!

To wear off all this cooking I’m also going to make sure that I spend a minimum amount of time organizing or cleaning some part of this house each day. Preferably things that make me go up and down the stairs to exercise off all that home cooked food πŸ˜‰

Last but not least – I am going to actually invest some money in some amazing cold weather clothes so that when I do go out of the house to drop/pick Emma up I am warm, comfortable, and look presentable. Those things never happen in my frumpy sweatshirts.. which don’t even keep me that warm anyways!

Here’s to kicking old habits goodbye before they get into my routine and mess up my awesome plans for life!

Just Around The Corner

12 Sep

The colder nights have set in and this girl is waking up with to light jackets in the morning and dare I say it – HOT CHOCOLATE! (I have an obsession I know!) I used to hate this time of year, back when I had to walk through the cold to get to school. It also mean I had to dress in layers upon layers because although it was freezing outside, our school seemed to be a sauna! Now that I’m a work from home mom, fall is my favorite time of year!

Dreamy Creamy Hot Chocolate. Its good! I just had it...in august...lol

Emma started school this year so I can’t even say it’s because school is back in (we are still getting a hang of this school thing πŸ˜‰ if you know what I mean!) but I will admit a few hours here and there to get some things done around here is something I am started to get used to!

on our way to school!

But there are definitely some things I am looking forward to for fall this year:

Being able to crochet without getting ridiculously hot and having to take breaks!

Feeling like I can actually open a book and read it! There something about summer that makes life so busy you seem like you never get a chance to read.

Books, cup of tea, and a comfy chair!

Wearing all those scarves I made πŸ˜› I have a new obsession with scarves now that the infinities came in to my life.

and of course – finally getting to snuggle with my little one without sweating to death πŸ˜‰

love cuddling with this one!

What are you looking forward to this fall?

DIY Place Mats

8 Aug

Β I have been dying to try out this pattern that I got from my Maw Maw (actually Brian’s Maw Maw but I claim her as mine!) and I finally got the chance to do it! This is so simple and so much fun. What you’ll need:

Mat Board
Pencil Scissors
1.5 to 2 yards of fabric
Sewing Machine
Iron & Board

If you have everything you need minus the mat board – do not go out and buy mat board! Find a box laying around your house that’s wide enough and long enough for this project.

There are three different sizes you could use for a place mat so feel free to pick any one, I chose the first:

or 12′ diameter for round.

First I took measurements to create my template, made a drawing on my board, and cut it out with scissors.
Once you have it cut out you’ll never have to measure again!!! That is probably my favorite thing about templates πŸ™‚ I have scrapes and piles of mat board, boxes, laying around the house just for this purpose.

Pull out your fabric and lay your template down on top and cut around it. I fold my fabric over and do two cuts at one time to make sure they are exactly identical!

Once you have your two pieces cut out I flip them inside out and give them a quick iron to make sure the pieces lay flat.

Pin around the edges and sew around all of them but leave a large enough opening on one side to flip it inside out.

As you can see in this photo – I just did a straight plain stitch around the edges.

And here is my opening to flip it inside out!

Once it’s flipped do a quick iron again, iron down the edges of the opening and pin it for sewing closed.

Sew all the edges with a fun decorative stitch and your done!

If you have seen my work before you know this is my go to decorative stitch. It uses up a lot of thread but I love the way it looks and it feels really secure!

I hope you enjoyed my place mats tutorial and if you’d like to go ahead and purchase them – I have these up on Etsy for sell here.

Mom, You Rock!

6 Aug

My mom has been a huge inspiration in my life, a dedicated supporter, and by my side no matter what I’m going through. I owe her the world and can’t wait to repay her back one day (either when she lets me or needs me – we’ll see which one comes first!).

My wonderful mother and amazing sister! ❀ love them with all my heart!

The past few weeks my mom has come to the new place πŸ˜€ and I’ve helped her switch over from blogger to wordpress. I really wanted the experience in it since it can help with my job being a virtual assistant but I also just wanted to give back to my mom for always giving to me!

We can now proudly say she is an official WordPress blogger πŸ˜‰ I am also so impressed with how well she dealt with the transition! It may just be me but I love getting a phone call from her randomly throughout the day. It tends to go like this:

“Jenn, do you have a moment you can help me with something on my blog?” Mom

“Sure!” Me

“Okay, so I am trying to do …. and it’s not working.” Mom

That just makes my day! I love being able to help people in an instant! It’s always been a favorite thing of mine and I’m not exactly sure when it started but it’s like I get this self esteem boost every time I fix something for someone else πŸ˜€ I know, I know, I have problems πŸ˜‰

If you are unfamiliar with my mom’s blog let me just explain it to you:

She writes book reviews, book life events, reading to Emma, and how the beach inspires her. If you like to read books she is definitely worth a follow! You can get the inside scoop on books that are getting ready to be published and some already published. Follow along with her on some of the BEST book events in the area (northern va, maryland, dc, and new york!). Check her out at Opes Opinions

I’m one proud daughter πŸ˜€

Thanks for stopping by today everyone and I hope you’ll support me and my family as well.

Mini Meal: Egg Salad Sandwiches

30 Jul

Hey everyone! It’s my first Mini Meal post!! HIP HIP HOORAY! I plan to have many of these throughout my blog to hopefully compile a great list of ideas for everyone.

If you don’t remember or didn’t see the post that started Mini Meals please refer here: Mini Meals

For those of you who don’t feel like clicking the link I’ll give a brief description!

Mini meals came about when I was trying to find new things to make for Emma to see if she would eat/like them but I didn’t feel like making an entire meals worth! Especially if she didn’t like it (or I don’t like it either!!) so I decided I’d figure out how to make meals for one person (or just my mini me).

Today I am making Egg Salad Sandwiches for my little one!

006Since I’d be eating this one too I put in three eggs. If I had been making this for just Emma I would have only done one.

Fill a pot with water and add the egg(s) and let it come to a boil. Once it starts boiling set the timer for 12-15 minutes. While you are waiting for it to boil you can get the rest of it ready!:

Pull out vinegar, mayo, mustard, salt, and pepper and a little bowl for mixing it in.

009When it comes to egg salad it’s all about preference but I’ll go ahead and let you know I like mine a little sloppy (extra mixture) rather then clumpy (more egg than mixture). SO! For three eggs I put in a half a cap of vinegar, four-five squirts of mayo, three-four squirts of mustard, and a good shake of salt and pepper. Mix Mix Mix!

I like using toast and I like it to be a little toasted since my egg salad is sloppy πŸ™‚ but for Emma I put her’s on a sandwich bun. It’s easier for her to hold and eat and I buy the little mini ones (like for sliders) and she LOVES them! I also like lettuce on mine (Emma does not!).

After the eggs are done boiling – pour it out into a strainer and run the eggs under cold water (because they will be hot HoT HOT!).

012Crack the edges and peel off the shell (for me this is the fun part! Don’t ask me why – I just like it)

013If you don’t have a smancy fancy dicer like min just use a nice to cut it into slices then squares πŸ™‚

Mix it up and up and dish it on your toast!

015We didn’t have my mini slider bun rolls today but she did just fine (after pulling out all the lettuce – it was worth a shot πŸ˜‰ haha) and it was a success! My child will eat egg salad sandwiches and I didn’t have to make a bunch and throw it away!!

I will say now that we’ve tried this – it has become a staple in this house! We eat it about once a week or every other week for lunch in this house and instead of making a bunch I just make one serving each time!

**For those of you who are packing lunches and taking them to work – you can make this meal the night before or the morning of and take it to work with you – just pop in the fridge and you can even eat it cold!**
