Keeping It Old School

14 Nov

If there’s one thing I love the most – it’s a fresh pad of paper ūüôā I know that sounds ridiculous but it’s the only thing that keeps me organised!

One Steno pad lasts me about 2 months. So every 2 months I get a fresh new one to re-organize my goals and lists. On the first page I put my Money Goals for the two weeks and the year. It keeps me on track for how much I hope to make in order to make this my sole income. It also gives me a perspective on what my goal was for the past 2 months and what I made during that time.

I also make a list of things I want to finish in that two months. As soon as it’s finished I get the joy of crossing it out!! It also is a way to remind myself to put it in my inventory list, know what yarn I need to purchase to replace the materials, and when it’s sold I mark it out on my inventory list to put it in outright for my taxes.

How can you be organized without a shopping list?! This girl can’t! I write things down in two sections: Home & Work. In order to keep this sheet available for two months I tend to white out what I’ve purchased so I can use it again ūüôā This page gets some serious love by the end of two months!

Then on the rest of the 75 sheets I write my daily lists of what I want to accomplish. It includes: housework, Emma’s needs, my goals, and sometimes even reminders for Brian. Since I’m limited on time I can get projects done, I schedule those during nap time and night time. You’ll see it says crochet during nap time, which today means I’ll be finishing up a boot cuff and making a matching one to create a pair. It then says crochet after bath time, which means I’ll be finishing up cup cozies and starting on a scarf.

It may seems silly to not organize my things on the computer but I can’t always take my computer with me when I’m shopping, I need time away from my computer (especially when I’m trying to get things accomplished), and I like the satisfaction of writing things down and crossing them off my list! It’s a joy I just can’t even explain!

How do you organize your life? Do you make sure to re-evaluate your list after a period of time?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Love Always,

J

Where did you get that yarn!?

31 Aug

Hey everyone! I’ve been getting a ton of questions about where I get my yarn and since my usual place closed down I thought I’d share with you now, the only place I can find my yarn!

Knitting-warehouse.com¬†¬†is now the only place I can find the yarn that I’m absolutely in love with. I’m really picky when it comes to yarn because I can’t stand anything scratchy touching my skin. You will never find me wearing wool sweaters, scarves, or hats. I just can’t stand the itch! So when I was hunting down some¬†incredibly soft yarn I found a brand I couldn’t resist.

Now that Hancocks has decided to leave our town and the next closest one is way to far for me to drive I’m now an only online purchaser! If you go online and check out what this brand costs for the amount you get – you might look at me like I’m crazy but it’s worth the price. Even better it’s always on sale online which makes up for shipping and pretty much even’s it out.

The other brands that I buy I can find at JoAnn’s no problem, you just can’t always find the color you are looking for which has brought me back to knitting-warehouse. Because each brand is cheaper online – it completely makes up for the shipping cost.

This also helps when I’m buying bulk orders, which tends to me more often then not, because it’s always cheaper to buy multiple things that come together in one box than it is separate. Especially since yarn is lightweight. As for shipping time it says 3-5 days but it’s unusual for it to take more than three days. If it does I just assume they are slam packed with orders but since I purchase year round and hardly have to wait for it – I’d say that’s a win/win!

Hope this helps ‚̧

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J

P.S. Knitting-warehouse.com did not ask me to write this post, pay for it, or give me anything for free – this post was written upon request buy readers interested in where I purchase my yarn and was completely written by my own opinion.

Work In Progress Wednesday: Seafood Festival Preview!

1 Feb

Hey Everyone! Finally a work in progress post right!? After taking a vacation and getting sick with a virus that lasted a week, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to actually get something accomplished! Thankfully I’m feeling better and I can get back on track and doing the things I love most!

Today I’m showing you something I’ve been so excited about! Now that the holiday rush is over I’ll be planning my entire year for the biggest craft show I’ve ever signed up for! Four straight days of crazy excitement in my home town – The Seafood Festival!! I’m kicking the new year off with a bang. Since I only have about one more month of cold weather (since this year has been weirdly warm) I’m crocheting my life away this month in hopes that I have enough for the fair. For those of you who don’t know, my home town school colors are maroon and gold so I found this yarn that goes from red to maroon and thought it would be perfect!

So here’s to my first craft show stash scarf!

I absolutely love how the colors just randomly change!

This is an upclose of the picture so you can show dramatic the color changes are – the lighting makes it look a little orange but it’s more of a red maroon like the first picture!

Emma sporting the scarf – when it’s wrapped twice it’s supposed to be like a cowl neck.

I am a half a skein away from being done with this so it will be a tad fuller and cozy! This isn’t the typical yarn I buy but it’s so soft I couldn’t resist! I’ve also been in a search for some gold yarn but that one is a little harder to find in the right softness.

Now if I could crank out about 20 of these in the next few weeks – that would be AWESOME! My goals are outrageous – I know!

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J

Feature Friday: amandajocrafts!

20 Jan

Today’s Feature Friday Presents:

amandajocrafts!

amandajocrafts is one of those happy accidents. Its owner, Amanda Jo, was in her senior year of college when she was given the opportunity to enter into a free craft fair at her school. Loving crocheting, she started searching for things she thought would sell, and amigurumis sparked her interest. Encouraging by how well the craft fair well and all the positive responses she received, she decided to take amandajocrafts online!¬†Amanda Jo is a recent graduate who majored in English and does not know what she wants to do with that. (Well, she does, but it involves being the next J.K. Rowling, and she tries to be practical.) For now, she’s delighted to have a big family, a good job, and be engaged ūüôā

What got you interested in crafting?

My mom is a very crafty woman, though she’d never admit it. She taught me how to sew, knit, crochet, needlepoint, etc, and was always there to help me when I got in over my head with patterns. I continued making things because I believe there’s something truly beautiful in handmade items; it’s like magic. Wearing something you’ve created, or seeing it hanging over the couch, or playing with it while it keeps you company on your desk is such a warm feeling — you know you’ve brought that piece to life.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My favorite project in my shop is making the octopi. There’s something so fun about creating all the squiggly legs, and they always have so much personality afterwards! ūüôā

Although, I’ve recently been getting into “themed” things (Harry Potter and Star Wars). They help cater to my strong tendency toward sci-fi and fantasy, and they have a great fan base on etsy that really brings in a lot of views!

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

Unfortunately, my etsy name is pretty bland. When I first started, I didn’t know if I wanted to keep just with amigurumis, or expand to other crocheting, or add some lino prints and litho prints (I also LOVE printmaking). So, I kept it pretty simple to allow for growing room.¬†

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

If I could open a store for my amigurumis, it’d probably be called (though the title is QUITE subject to change!) Amanda’s Adorable Amigurumis. It would be brightly colored, covered in fun, massive amigurumis, in all colored and animals. It would be a bustling, stupendous playground for everyone, and I would encourage jumping in the mound of baby amigurumis ūüôā

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

The most challenging thing I’ve ever done was create a linoleum print that was 24″x36″ of a girl standing in a field holding sunflowers. It was a reduction print with five colors, which means you have to cut some of the linoleum, print it, then cut more and print that, etc. It’s a mind-blowing, intricate process that is also the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Now that I’m out of college, I don’t have the materials to do another one, but someday *crossing fingers* I’ll be able to again.¬†

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

Well, I’d love to keep plugging away at my shop. It’s been an uphill battle to get attention, as the vast majority of etsy sellers know, but it’s also been so rewarding for me that I’ve never minded. I’d love to expand my fan base, really.¬†
I could make lofty plans to make etsy my full-time job, but I’m also trying to be realistic, and so I know that’s nearly impossible at this stage in my life.¬†

What inspires you to be crafty?

Everything! I swear, the second I sit down and tell myself to take it easy, I’m whipping out my latest amigurumi, dragging my ton of scrapbooking stuff into the living room to update my books, picking out patterning for a new blanket, starting a new sweater…

Every thing I see, I think I can make it (even if I maybe can’t :P). Every thing I touch, I want to know how it’s done. That “craft” gene just does not sleep!

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

Without “tooting my horn,” I like to think I bring personality to my amigurumis. They’re not just things, they have a life to them. It doesn’t matter if I use the same pattern twenty times, they’ll all come out looking just a little bit different. I love that I can breathe that life into something and make it coveted.

At the first craft fair I did, a pre-teen girl came up to my table and fell in love with a little white rabbit. It was a tiny thing, and she just kept holding it and hugging it and saying how cute it was. After she bought it and moved on, I could still see her holding onto that bunny through the other booths. I love that I’m able to make someone that happy.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Hmm….I don’t know if it would be endless time to create, more collateral, or more views! Right now, I’m really happy with the opportunity to create, and I’d love to have the resources to share that some more ūüôā

” I’m a mom of two fantastic boys and I’ve been a professional graphic designer for over 14 years.¬†My husband and I live just outside of Boston with our kids and big swiss mountain dog.¬†I’ve been involved in the arts for as long as I can remember and I love to make things with my hands. Crochet is a fantastic outlet for me to relax and rejuvenate after working on a computer in a very 2-D career each day. I’ve always loved being creative and I hope you’ll enjoy my shop!¬†ūüôā “

What got you interested in crafting?

My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl and I mostly just made clothes for my barbies at the time. I hadn’t crocheted in about 15 years and I just decided last winter that I really wanted to make myself a scarf… so I took it back up again and here I am!

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My favorite project so far has been my tan puppy. He was created because a friend of mine had a niece that was very attached to a yellow lab that her mother owned, but was very old and probably not going to be around to the end of the summer. She wanted to give her niece a tan puppy to remind her of her favorite dog and comfort her in the future…. and so the tan puppy in my shop was born.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name? (How did you come up with it?)

The secret behind my Etsy name has to do with my kids – they both are such little busy bodies around the house, they are always just “doodling” around tinkering with things here and there as they go – I started calling them my little doodlebugs. When I decided to start a shop catering to kids on Etsy – it just seemed like the perfect name!

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

The most challenging thing I have made is something I’m STILL working on! I’m looking to add a kitty to my shop and I think I’ve finally got the right pattern ideas in my head – I made one already but he didn’t QUITE look right – for me, it’s all the little details that need to be just right to make him too cute to resist… the size and shape of the ears, the right tail shape, etc. It can be challenging at times.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

My goals for the next year are to continue to grow my Etsy shop by creating more animals, offering more colors and continuing to create beautiful blankets. I’ve had some interest in local galleries and not-so local shops to carry my work and I hope to also grow that side of my business next year. However, my biggest goal is to keep enjoying what I make, have fun, and keep those kid’s smiles coming!

What inspires you to be crafty?

I get inspired by kids – having my own and seeing all of my friends’ kids – they are just the best. There’s no better feeling than having a little kid squeeze the heck out of one of my animals and just HAVING to have it with them all day and night. That makes me so happy – and there really isn’t any better inspiration to keep going!

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

If I could have one thing to help my store, anything at all, it would be another set of hands! Although I work fairly fast, crochet takes time – some days and weeks I find myself with more work than I can physically do myself. The handmade quality is what makes my shop beautiful and unique, but from a business sense, I feel that it does tend to limit how much I can grow.

Spotty Dog Crochet is the perfect store to get any custom handmade crocheted item! This is where you are going to get an item that is custom made just for you! She does more fiber art than just crochet so if you have a specific thing in mind – don’t hesitate to ask her! I personally love giving gifts like these because they are one of a kind and the time and effort spent making these types of things really make it a personal and meaningful gift.¬†

What got you interested in crafting?

I have been creative my whole life and then in college a friend of mine taught me how to knit. Once I learned how to knit I started researching other types of fiber art and eventually fell in love with crocheting.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My favorite project to make is my ruffled edge scarf. It is easy to make but still looks fancy.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

My 1-year-old beagle / pointer mix puppy named Fenway is black and white spotted and he loves to “help” me with my projects.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

I would probably keep the name Spotty Dog Crochet and I would love to have a yarn / supply store with plenty of space for people to sit, knit and have a cup of tea.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

My girly wool soaker. Figuring out how to add the little skirt took me a long time, I must have taken it out and started it over a hundred times.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within thenext year?

I would love to keep improving my etsy shop. There is so much about this world of selling on the internet that I am still trying to figure out. Also, personally my husband and I are in the process of buying a house and I can’t wait to get all moved in and settled.

What inspires you to be crafty?

Seeing new projects and patterns. I love how relaxing it is to just sit and work through a project.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

I would like to think that it is how creative I am. I can never stick to a pattern, I always end up changing things around to make them more unique and one of a kind.

If you could have one thing in your store what would it be?

I already have a ruffled edge scarf in the same color green as the one in my shop. I would love to have one of my blankets, the tan lap blanket would look great folded over my couch.

If you haven’t already stopped by the shop yet check it out: Spotty Dog Crochet

Crafts: A little POP of Color

20 Sep

I absolutely love scarves as a little pop of color in my drabby winter outfits ūüėõ So I made an aqua scarf to give me some of that extra pop I need!

It’s just your traditional loop scarf but done with a little twist – literally I twisted it while crocheting so it¬†automatically¬†curls right where you want it to! I kind of made my own pattern as I went and I’m currently ¬†making another one in a thicker material to see if it works out just as well. This scarf is really light weight soft and easy! It took me two days to make it which I am really excited about because these days I need fast easy things to accomplish!

I showed my mom this and within seconds she had it wrapped around her saying she wanted three! Two for her and one for a gift. Silly mom ūüėÄ So it looks like I’ll be busy for six days just filling her order ūüėČ

It seems like for the past few days I’ve been avoiding my craft table. I’m not sure why really because I have a LIST of things I want to do and I’m really excited about it – I think I’m having trouble juggling everything else and feeling guilty about spending time crafting when I need to be cleaning or doing chores. I’m hoping to get most of my chores finished tomorrow because Thursday I am having a guilt free craft day and by that I mean I’m doing NOTHING but crafting (and BNRing) and really this time – no distractions! I need to get inventory BOOMING because it’s the end of September and I’m starting to freak out that my table is going to be bare. Which it’s not because I do have quite a few things – just not everything I want and I’m not quite sure how much I really need.

Another reason I haven’t been at the craft table working is because I’ve been in the mood to crochet. It seems like that’s all I feel like doing these days! I’ve constantly got yarn on my mind lol.

Okay moving on – so things to look forward to. More scarves ūüėõ (if you hadn’t figured that one out already) the beaded wall art that I keep saying I’m going to finish. I’m actually going to work on that Thursday. I’m holding off on doing the pillow covers out of Polo’s until I find the right size pillow I want to do. There’s some new fabric that needs new homes on burp cloths and some scraps I really want to make something simple easy and fun out of. I’ve been scoping out ideas for those! Let’s see how much I can accomplish in one day!

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J

Crafts: The Night Owl

13 Sep

Lately I feel like my life has taken a different turn. Some nights I go to bed with my husband and just lay there wide away. Other nights I pass out instantly.. tonight.. I’m sitting on the couch writing this blog and crocheting my little heart away ūüėõ

I’m not exactly sure when this started because for as long as I can remember (after E was born) I went to bed as soon as it started getting dark outside!! Okay okay – I went to bed between 9-10. Then it got pushed to 11. Lately it’s been 12 or 1. Tonight – who knows!! I’m wide awake and ready to go!!!!

Luckily I get to nap during the day so it’s not like I’m going to become a zombie, but I’m slowly starting to figure out what started this insomnia. I think I’m safe to blame it on blogging, etsy, crafting, facebook, pinterest, but most importantly – it’s the only time of day where this house is¬†COMPLETELY¬†SILENT! I love the silence. Even though I can’t do half of my crafts because they are way to noisy.. it’s still nice to sit here and crochet or paint.

Yesterday I made a yarn wrapped wreath with felt flowers and buttons. It’s a very quiet craft and I had no problem doing it while the girls were napping. It was kind of relaxing! Here’s how it turned out (sorry for the poor photo quality…)

I am super happy with the end result. I have now found a million other ways to make different felt and fabric flowers, and also found a place to buy the wreath itself where it isn’t so darn expensive!!! (Thank you pinterest in advanced)

Tonight I’m crocheting that big hug cowl from the pattern – except I’m hardly using the patter. I’m not using the exact yarn they used, or the size needle, or even the crochet type… I like my way better!!! We’ll see how it turns out. I don’t know what it is but have the hardest time following patterns. Partially because most of them speak in a code that I swear no one really understands, but mainly because once I start making it the way they say to – I think it looks funny, so I try something else and I think it looks so much better! So here goes another trial and error – luckily my past few trial and errors have turned out pretty well!

I also went and bought some new felt for the beaded monogram letters. I finally decided what I’m going to do to spice each one up! It took a lot planning and I didn’t even finish the plan for the E one until just a few minutes ago! I think I might sketch it out tomorrow so I know exactly what it’ll look like. I haven’t sketched in days though – so wish me luck!

Some other things I bought..

You guessed it – More Fabric! I think I need a vacation from JoAnns – It seems like I can’t walk in there anymore without buying a ton of things. Until I finish making my inventory list of burp cloths – I’m not allowed to buy anymore!! Unless I get orders for more off of etsy!

Although I won’t be going anywhere except maybe the post office for the next few days. I’ll have my hands full all week and weekend with the girls. That should make my wallet happy and hopefully the week after that I can avoid shopping again and get a lot of crafty things done! It’s going to be hard to get much done this week but I’ll keep trying!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J

Q&A

What got you interested in crafting?

Ever since I was a kid I remember being crafty. We would make fashion shows of our school clothes and walk the hallway like it was a runway. I would write plays, make the sets, makeup, and perform all in the same day! I loved finding office supplies and thinking “What could I do with this?”. My father was a little annoyed by it! Ha! At the end of college my roommate taught me how to crochet. I couldn’t really make anything past a scarf at that point, but it got me on the right track.

About 2 years ago I started paper-crafting. It’s possibly¬†one of the nerdiest¬†crafts ever. You cut, fold, and glue cardstock into 3D¬†shapes. Most patterns are for video game or anime characters. I loved starting with something flat and blank and producing these giant sculptures! I then joined crafster and started participating in swaps. This really helped me branch out into learning different crafts and I haven’t stopped since. I want to learn how to make all the things!

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

Probably my favorite to make are these cute heart shadow boxes. The hearts stick out with an illusion of being 3-d. The pattern on the paper is so pretty I just like to stare at it.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

I knew I had to think of a really good name that suited me. I started doing sketches and all I came out with was Giraffes in Top Hats. When I was little I would draw giraffes on EVERYTHING! and then give them to my grandpa. I even have a giraffe tattoo! The name then appeared in my head and I couldn’t get it out. When you have a good idea, you just gotta run with!

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

I think I would still call it Giraffes on Parade cause I am in love with the name so much. The walls would be two colors, the bottoms fake wood painted white, and the tops a bright pink! The walls lined with simplistic one color paintings of giraffes and then in the middle in delicious glass cabinets would be all my pretty creations waiting for someone to take them home.
I’m pretty random most of the time, but I’ve always wanted a job where I can go dressed up. That’s how I think my shop would be. Crazy, Random, Cute, and very open.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?
I tried to make these felt lolita clip on top-hats once for a swap. They came out terrible! I got hot glue everywhere and they wouldn’t stand straight up. I felt really bad for my partner, but I loved trying something new.

The other hardest thing I would have to say was this papercraft¬†of about a 3/4 of a foot tall chocobo. The pattern came with no instructions because the creator thought “it was easy enough and didn’t need any”. Oi! I glued his head on backwards and his wings upside-down. It was a travesty.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I’d love to lose 10 pounds! But I mean… who doesn’t? ha! I think for my shop I would like to have a fun little community. I love hearing how much people love the stuff I make, how it made their day, how they use it all the time! I really want to make a difference, or be known for doing something stupendous. I want my cutie mark! (My little pony reference anyone?)

What inspires you to be crafty?

To get the creativity flowing I like to listen to music, mostly techno or classical, and look at other great crafts. I find that my biggest inspiration actually comes from requests. I am a people pleaser and if someone wants something special the ideas come flooding in.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

I am a slight perfectionist. I have to make my items look like they belong in a store. If you are walking down an aisle and you see two similar items, but one is bent-¬†you’re gonna want the one that’s not bent. If I send out something that’s not completely perfect¬†I feel like I’m disrespecting my customer. Which absolutely can’t happen! If it takes an extra day of production to make sure it is 100% the bestest thing ever, I would rather be a little late!

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Customers? Those would be really nice! I think of anything I could use a shipping expert, that part usually gives me the headaches!

If you haven’t already stopped by her shop, check it out here!

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,
