Taking Advice Never Hurts!

6 Mar

Thanks to some wonderful advice from my readers I started small with some of the tasks I was facing. Apparently starting small worked miracles because not only did I get what I wanted accomplished – I surprised myself and got a heck of a lot done!

For those of you new readers: I have been having major problems accomplishing things around this household due to the fact that I don’t have my own space away from everything. All the spaces available to me that I had to work were either in view of all the other chores I needed to do (completely distracting me), or in the middle of our families common area. Little 2-year-old hands and questions, plus my husbands TV and video games were the entertainment that kept me accomplishing anything!

I had recently taken over my parents dining room while they were out-of-town and quickly realized what I needed. A space to call my own, away from TV’s, dishes, laundry, toys, 2-year-old hands, chores, projects, or anything that moved really. (I’m easily distracted – don’t make fun of me!) It was a huge table of success and probably the biggest DUH moment I ever had. I’ve never given myself any place to really call my own except for my side of the bed. I share everything!

Here is the nice big old space I had at my parents place:

So in case you didn’t know: My dilemma is making something like this – happen in my little apartment. The advice that I got from a super intelligent reader was to Start Small. Okay this shouldn’t be a problem for me but apparently it was! I think and dream wayyyy to big to be boxed in the small category. Since the apartment is a completely open space – the only closed off areas are the two bedrooms, the bathroom, and the storage (which is a disaster of a chore needing tlc). Emma’s room and the bathroom were out of the question. That leaves me with my room and the storage. There’s no way I can work in the storage so my room it is!

Funniest thing ever – there is a little desk in my room tucked away in a corner piled high with … crap. So again – I start small. I cleared off the top of the desks, headed to the drawers, and bam! It’s like a brand new desk ready for work right? No. Not exactly. It’s tucked in a corner that’s completely unworkable. I’d never function there. I sat on my bed and decided it was time to re-arrange the room anyways. I have a big old habit of rearranging furniture every couple of months and this was way past due time.

I decided then – If I am going to move all these pieces of furniture I am cleaning out all of them.

Under the bed – cleaned out.

Side Tables – pretty and clean!

Dresser – Clean and rearranged! Love it!

Next step was moving everything around to put my desk in the prime location. In-between the windows!! I absolutely love natural light and this room is the one place during the day that gets the most gorgeous sun – so why not take advantage of it, right? Oh I did! I moved that sucker right in between two huge windows and set up shop.

Now this is where starting small really means the most to me. No I can’t fit my entire craft collection in here – I have way to much stuff and a huge table that would never make it. So I left all my crafting things where they are in the “dining room”. I moved all my books, paperwork, computer, camera, and small things in here. I also got rid of a pile of things that were in our box in our hallway that keeps bills, recipes, and miscellaneous things in it.

Welcome to my new office! A huge part of my crafting life now dedicated to my own space. So who cares if I have to craft next to all my chores – at least I’m getting all my busy work done away from all the chaos!

I’ll have to take a picture during the daylight so you can see how gorgeous it is in here 😛 Oh Oh! Check out my clean drawers. I don’t think these drawers have been cleaned since we moved in here (three years ago).

Ahhh I love organization! I will say that doing projects like this just makes me want to go full-out crazy and makeover the entire room! I’ve had this color palate in my head for a while now. I’m slowly transforming this room into something similar to this:

Not necessarily that bedspread – just the color theme! Here’s another color theme example:

I’ve pretty much already headed in that direction! My wall colors are the second color down, my comforter is the light gray and black, and my bedside lamps are the first yellow color. I want to paint my side tables white and line them with some sort of yellow patterned paper or vinyl like this:

Then I want to paint my desk white and line the drawers the same way.

I’m also in search for a thrift store dresser. I love ours – but it’s a family  hand me down and it comes in a huge set so there’s no way I’d want to paint it. But since I’m changing all my other furniture white – I want a white dresser too! So I’ll be on the look out for a cheap new one!

Then to top off my room changing – art. I want something on these bare walls and something much prettier to hang above my desk 😉

Maybe something like this?

But maybe framed since we aren’t living here forever and I’d like to take it with me 😛

Well enough daydreaming for now! I’ll keep on the look out for things to upgrade around my room and then maybe we could do a room by room budget friendly update! ❤ Now I’m really dreaming! As long as I start small – these should all be do-able things!

Note to self: Listen to all advice given by amazing readers 😉

A Visit to Our Local Aquarium!

3 Mar

Last weekend my sister and I took Emma to the local Aquarium. Every year it has been a tradition to take her to the Zoo and each time we go it so much more fun so when we saw there was an Aquarium we thought that could be our winter tradition since it’s too cold for the Zoo! This was the PERFECT time to take her to. All week we were preparing her with photo’s of fish, teaching her the word fish, and making hilarious fishy faces. Check out the pictures:

Every tank we walked by she screamed “THERE’S FISHIES!” Then in the tanks where she couldn’t see them (the reptile ones) she would say – “Wheres da fishies?” Then there was the alligator tank. There was a white alligator tank that she was mesmerized by! She kept asking to go see the alligator so we walked around in circles about three or four times so she could see everything and scream FISHIES all she wanted 😀

I wish I had gotten her fishy faces on camera – we’ll have to work on that and update it later!

Note to self: Always say yes to adventures with animals and kids. She napped like a queen and was in a great mood all day!

Feature Friday: Briarosedesigns!

Feature Friday Presents:

Briarosedesigns!

“My Etsy shop was kind of a spontaneous happening that grew to be a huge part of my life. My store is very near to my heart because it reflects who I am. I love this job and I know it will always be a part of my life. I’m going to school for social work so I can teach art therapy and bring that joy to others. The only thing I like doing as much as crafting is teaching. Also, I am a proud mother of a beautiful 2-year-old girl, she is definitely my best creation ;)”

What got you interested in crafting?

I’ve always been interested in crafting since as long as I can remember. For me it’s really a need to do rather than a want to do. Crafting keeps me sane and I thank god for it every day. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t sit and crochet but I’m sure I’d be a mess. 😛

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

My favorite project to make is probably the crocheted hooded cowl that I’ve just listed. Mostly because I absolutely LOVE to crochet but also because it was my first design. I didn’t follow a pattern I just created it. There is something very freeing about that.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

My Etsy name is Briarosedesign but I’m in the process of changing it to Mystic Treasure. Briarose is a mix of my first and middle name, Brianna Rose, and I use it for everything. Even though I like it I wanted a more fitting name for my shop. I’ve always loved the word mystic and I think it describes my shop well. I tend to design very mystical accessories so I went with the trend and redesigned my shop banner to fit. I love it because there are fairies everywhere now!

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

If I could open up a shop it would probably be multi purposed. I would love to have a shop where I could sell my designs but I’d also want to sell supplies and teach classes. I love teaching just as much as I love creating. I’m not sure what I would call it but it would be great.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

The most challenging thing I have made is not listed in my Etsy shop. It was a wire wrapped sculpture of a butterfly on a flower. It took a lot of redoing to get the shapes just right. The sculpture was for a friend and had great meaning behind it so I wanted it to be perfect.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I’m working on getting 100 different and unique items in my shop. It is important to me to offer variety. I also have a ton of craft shows planned this year that I think will get me great exposure. I don’t really want to move to fast with my Etsy shop I just plan to let it bloom with time. I have so many other goals on my list but those are the most relevant.

What inspires you to be crafty?

Everything inspires me to be crafty. It doesn’t take much for my mind to start dreaming up creations to attempt to make. Color has a particular influence over me.

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

My best quality in crafting is my worst quality in life. I have a little self diagnosed OCD which gets annoying in day-to-day life but really creates a beautiful symmetry in my work. I think it is my ability to mix creativity with this strictness that helps make my work successful.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

More sales. 😀 I would love to have enough monthly sales to be able to do this full-time. Right now I am just starting out and haven’t done much promoting. It’s amazing the amount of sales I’ve gotten with zero promotion so I’m sure I’ll get more once I start advertising…then I’ll be asking for more time.

Thoughtful Thursday: A Hard Lesson To Learn

1 Mar

If you’ve been reading the last few Thursday posts – you know that I’m trying to enhance my life, work efficiently, and grow as a business and a person. This week has really given me a hard lesson to learn!!

After following my seven steps and working hard to be productive (which I have) I have also come to my realization of what exactly is holding me back. It’s not motivation, it’s not family or friends, it’s not even really me. It’s my space. Trying to get work done in an area that isn’t exactly defined as your own is a hard thing to accomplish. Since I live in a small (but perfect size for our family) apartment it has come to my realization that there is not one spot in the house that you can’t look around and see all the chores or things that are left undone. Even without a list of things to torment me – all I have to do is open my eyes and turn around!!

My parents went out-of-town and I invaded their space. I took all the things I need/want to work on and nothing more. I am surrounded by clean open space with lots of room and table space. It’s a crafter’s dream getaway!

I can wake up, get ready, get my chores done, and escape to my area to get things done! Emma can even come up and go hog-wild and it doesn’t change a thing. You can see that all the mess – is just my work stuff. Even with that pile of paperwork I still have room to sew! I mean how hard is it to pile a couple of books and paper together to make more room instead of looking at the dirty dishes, laundry, toys on the floor, other not as important paperwork in piles, and things you can’t move out of they way because you have no where else to put them!!

The hard part is that I don’t get to keep it. As soon as they are done with their trip I will be back into my old routine of things. The other hard part is knowing that we will be moving soon and I’ll have a chance to get my own space in my own house like this – but we aren’t exactly sure when that will be right now. We know it’s soon!! But there’s not an actual date set yet.

So if you are like me and easily distracted and weighed down by all the things you haven’t done. Get away from them! Pack up your things or find a room in your house that you can create your own getaway. I can’t tell you how clear my head has been while I’ve been working and how much progress I’ve made. Here’s just a few things:

Tuesday Tutorial: Hot Air Balloon Centerpieces!

28 Feb

Welcome to Tuesday Tutorials – where I find awesome easy tutorials for you – now go get crafty 😉

This crafty tutorial comes from: RuffledBlog

Floating Hot Air Balloons

I now have this sudden urge of throwing a party that requires hot air balloons. Just so I can make these. Karen, the crafty bride from this gorgeous wedding shot by Paul Von Rieter, made these whimsical hot air balloons using large bouncy balls. They are often found at dollar stores, so they can be made affordably. Thank you for sharing, these are incredible! More DIY details in the gallery and on her blog.

What you’ll need:

– large bouncy balls
– potted herbs
– square tin pots (or cans)
– acrylic paint
– brush
– twine for tying tins to the “balloons”

Instructions:

To make each pattern, I started off by drawing a base guide. I taped a long piece of string to the ball, and then I tied a Sharpie to the end of that string where I wanted to start drawing a guide. Then I rotated the Sharpie along that string “axis” to draw a perfect circle around the ball. I did this several times along different lengths, with the same taped point. Just imagine a bunch of “latitude” lines drawn on the ball with Sharpie. I use those new circles to guide me with drawing a symmetrical pattern for each of the balls. If you want to be really precise, I would measure the circumference of the “equator”, and divide that evenly by a number for an exact repeating pattern.

Once your balloons are dry, attach your herb “baskets” to them using twine. Punch holes on your herb tins with the help of a hammer and nails. Attach them to the ceiling and add your table numbers to the bottom of each.

Books: Love my Nook!

14 Feb

I just downloaded a book that I saw a review on and am SUPER excited about reading it. You can find the review here: http://funkyfeisty.wordpress.com/2011/02/08/crafty-superstar-book-review/

I’ve sort of pushed my reading aside for painting but I also added a few sample books to see if they are worth purchasing so I might just have a few book reviews in the near future. That is if I can keep up with reading once I start taking care of the girls 😀

Here’s a preview of the samples I bought and I’ll let you know if the thirty pages get me excited enough to buy them!

Let’s hope these samples get me back into the reading mood 😉

A Book Challenge for the Challenged Reader :P

30 Nov

My sister sent me this email about a book challenge for 2011 and I got pretty excited! I love reading books, however it takes me a while to read one due to my “easily distracted disease” haha. This one sounded fun because you get to pick the books you want to read yourself! There isn’t a premade list of books that you probably won’t like the majority of! The only regulation is that you read at least one book from each of the 50 states of America! I can do that! Plus it starts after the holidays 🙂 So you get a whole month to relax before you jump in.

I have added a link on my blogroll —> over there —> called the 2011 book challenge and it’s a google map. Everytime I finish a book that represents one of the states I will add the cover to the map along with writing a book review on my blog. Totally fun!

If you are interested in doing it yourself here is the link: http://bookjourney.wordpress.com/2010/11/30/2011-where-are-you-reading-challenge/

Tonight I plan on starting to make a list of books I am interested in that will fit in this challenge. Until then I still have two more books to accomplish and review.

If you are an avid book reader and love to read book reviews I seriously suggest checking out her blog. It’s Kritters Ramblings – also over there —> on my blogroll. She reads books a million times faster than me and has an awesome list of reviews. She also has awesome taste in books!!!!

This should be fun!

Love Always,

J
