Happy Thanksgiving!

22 Nov

This year for Thanksgiving – we are spending time in Front Royal with Brian’s side of the family. We do it potluck style where we each bring  something, we catch up, watch the game (I married into a Redskins family), and eat!! I can picture it now – the men in their jersey’s hanging out in front of the TV, the women talking about life, and Emma running around like she’s been eating sugar for weeks 😉

So while that image entertains you (hopefully as much as it entertains me) here’s a list of things I am thankful for this year:

My loving family.

The ability to do what I love each day.

That even though sometimes we are stressed out and trying to make things work around here – that we are able to do it and we make it through all the hard times together.

I know that there is WAY more to be thankful of but right now, those are the most important for me 🙂
What are you thankful for this year?

Late Night Chats With Myself ;)

15 Nov

Even though you are reading this at some point and it’s probably Thursday for you – technically I am writing this at 11:15 pm Wednesday. So I’ll go ahead and apologize for the lack of pictures and random long sentences.

I’m sitting up after realizing that I have absolutely no clean clothes to wear to my appointment tomorrow. Little Mrs. Has It All Together from my list post yesterday, doesn’t quite have it all together 😉 Well at least not for tomorrow!

If you are a mom, you probably understand when I say that I tend to put everyone before myself. In this case, the rest of my families clothes managed to get done before mine. Silly me thinking I’d be fine with raggity t-shirts and leggings. Whoops!!

So tonight I will be sitting up listening for the dryer to stop so I can move loads in order to have an outfit that is allowed to step out in the public clean for tomorrow!

It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed up late and been the only person awake. If you have been a long time follower of my blog then you’d know that I used to do this all the time. It was the only way to get peace and quiet to myself. Emma was hardly napping for a while there and when she was, I was too!

I had gotten used to staying up later just to get some me time and I spent it sewing, crocheting, blogging, catching up on music and tv shows. It’s amazing that an hour or two of dead silence for your brain to think can really change a person! I felt so free, got so much crafting accomplished, and almost felt like a teenager all over again 🙂

My blogging might have even been better because of it! When I have time to think, writing comes so naturally. Like now. I could probably ramble on for hours because it’s like my mind has space to stretch out and breathe! That is if you like it when I ramble 😉

Staying up like this tonight is a reminder of all that. It’s also a reminder of why I quit doing it!! Sure an hour or two of freedom sounds so refreshing and exciting, but I was also dead tired the next day. I hardly woke up on time, counting down the hours to Emma’s nap time so I could nap too, and feeling like a zombie. I really don’t miss living like that. I missed out on so many fun things with Emma!! I’m not so much looking forward to that tomorrow – but at least I’ll be clothed properly.

Luckily tomorrow is a day off for me as well. Emma will be playing with Nana all day and I’ll be with my Mom in Alexandria for my appointment, her appointment, and then running a few errands. I’ll be able to not be completely all there tomorrow 😉 and if anyone understands that – it’s my Mom!!

As much as I’ll hate this tomorrow – I may just end up doing this again every once in a while. My brain needed it!

Well it’s time to change loads and catch up on shows 😉 See you all bright and early tomorrow and probably napping as soon as I get home haha!

Love Always,

J

Play Space Makeover!

21 Mar

Hey everyone! Since I’m having trouble getting anything done around here I thought I’d let you in on my brainstorming projects. Today I’m going to show you what I have planned for Emma’s Play Space. Just so you know, her place space is a little 4×4 area in our living room since we have a small basement apartment. This is what it looks like now:

She’s crammed into this little corner that I tried to make as accessible as possible to her. She still has a huge amount of floor space that she can pull out all her toys and play with but what I’m hoping to do in this process is create an organized area that’s easier to get to and the possibility of her playing in that area as well!

In this picture you can see that she’s also spread out in front of our TV area. Since she has some big floor toys it’s hard to keep them all in one little area so I’ll be working on figuring out a solution for this as well!

Here is her bedroom play area. She spends as much time in here as she does out in the living room so I’m going to try to divide up the toys into what fits better where 😉

So what I have planned is going to be a big makeover! We are going to be purchasing this in white (if you hadn’t noticed I like clean white furniture):

I’m going to be buying these or something similar to these to put inside the cubbies:

and on the cubbies I am going to stick a vinyl decal in the shape of the toy that goes in that bucket – like this but probably in white:

So that is the beginning of my organizing process. I want to get as many toys off the floor as I can and make it so it’s easier for her to put them away and find them again. With the toy bin it makes it super easy to clean, but impossible to find all the right toys. Now that Emma is old enough I’m really excited about teaching her how to put her toys away in a defined area!

Okay so her little corner consists of two walls. The cubbie cabinet will be on one wall and on the other wall I want to build a simple small desk. Similar to this picture but without the cubbies on top or bottom.

Then right off the end of that table attached to it, I want to build a little triangle side table so I can put her tan chair next to it facing at a better angle to the TV (yes she likes TV and yes I let her watch it – don’t yell at me 😛 haha)

If you aren’t one of those people who can easily picture something I’m super sorry! Good news about this project is that it will be starting up soon so you’ll get to see it all happening in no time!

What do you think about my makeover ideas? Do you have suggestions for those big floor toys?

Thanks for stopping by!

Taking Advice Never Hurts!

6 Mar

Thanks to some wonderful advice from my readers I started small with some of the tasks I was facing. Apparently starting small worked miracles because not only did I get what I wanted accomplished – I surprised myself and got a heck of a lot done!

For those of you new readers: I have been having major problems accomplishing things around this household due to the fact that I don’t have my own space away from everything. All the spaces available to me that I had to work were either in view of all the other chores I needed to do (completely distracting me), or in the middle of our families common area. Little 2-year-old hands and questions, plus my husbands TV and video games were the entertainment that kept me accomplishing anything!

I had recently taken over my parents dining room while they were out-of-town and quickly realized what I needed. A space to call my own, away from TV’s, dishes, laundry, toys, 2-year-old hands, chores, projects, or anything that moved really. (I’m easily distracted – don’t make fun of me!) It was a huge table of success and probably the biggest DUH moment I ever had. I’ve never given myself any place to really call my own except for my side of the bed. I share everything!

Here is the nice big old space I had at my parents place:

So in case you didn’t know: My dilemma is making something like this – happen in my little apartment. The advice that I got from a super intelligent reader was to Start Small. Okay this shouldn’t be a problem for me but apparently it was! I think and dream wayyyy to big to be boxed in the small category. Since the apartment is a completely open space – the only closed off areas are the two bedrooms, the bathroom, and the storage (which is a disaster of a chore needing tlc). Emma’s room and the bathroom were out of the question. That leaves me with my room and the storage. There’s no way I can work in the storage so my room it is!

Funniest thing ever – there is a little desk in my room tucked away in a corner piled high with … crap. So again – I start small. I cleared off the top of the desks, headed to the drawers, and bam! It’s like a brand new desk ready for work right? No. Not exactly. It’s tucked in a corner that’s completely unworkable. I’d never function there. I sat on my bed and decided it was time to re-arrange the room anyways. I have a big old habit of rearranging furniture every couple of months and this was way past due time.

I decided then – If I am going to move all these pieces of furniture I am cleaning out all of them.

Under the bed – cleaned out.

Side Tables – pretty and clean!

Dresser – Clean and rearranged! Love it!

Next step was moving everything around to put my desk in the prime location. In-between the windows!! I absolutely love natural light and this room is the one place during the day that gets the most gorgeous sun – so why not take advantage of it, right? Oh I did! I moved that sucker right in between two huge windows and set up shop.

Now this is where starting small really means the most to me. No I can’t fit my entire craft collection in here – I have way to much stuff and a huge table that would never make it. So I left all my crafting things where they are in the “dining room”. I moved all my books, paperwork, computer, camera, and small things in here. I also got rid of a pile of things that were in our box in our hallway that keeps bills, recipes, and miscellaneous things in it.

Welcome to my new office! A huge part of my crafting life now dedicated to my own space. So who cares if I have to craft next to all my chores – at least I’m getting all my busy work done away from all the chaos!

I’ll have to take a picture during the daylight so you can see how gorgeous it is in here 😛 Oh Oh! Check out my clean drawers. I don’t think these drawers have been cleaned since we moved in here (three years ago).

Ahhh I love organization! I will say that doing projects like this just makes me want to go full-out crazy and makeover the entire room! I’ve had this color palate in my head for a while now. I’m slowly transforming this room into something similar to this:

Not necessarily that bedspread – just the color theme! Here’s another color theme example:

I’ve pretty much already headed in that direction! My wall colors are the second color down, my comforter is the light gray and black, and my bedside lamps are the first yellow color. I want to paint my side tables white and line them with some sort of yellow patterned paper or vinyl like this:

Then I want to paint my desk white and line the drawers the same way.

I’m also in search for a thrift store dresser. I love ours – but it’s a family  hand me down and it comes in a huge set so there’s no way I’d want to paint it. But since I’m changing all my other furniture white – I want a white dresser too! So I’ll be on the look out for a cheap new one!

Then to top off my room changing – art. I want something on these bare walls and something much prettier to hang above my desk 😉

Maybe something like this?

But maybe framed since we aren’t living here forever and I’d like to take it with me 😛

Well enough daydreaming for now! I’ll keep on the look out for things to upgrade around my room and then maybe we could do a room by room budget friendly update! ❤ Now I’m really dreaming! As long as I start small – these should all be do-able things!

Note to self: Listen to all advice given by amazing readers 😉

Thoughtful Thursday: A Hard Lesson To Learn

1 Mar

If you’ve been reading the last few Thursday posts – you know that I’m trying to enhance my life, work efficiently, and grow as a business and a person. This week has really given me a hard lesson to learn!!

After following my seven steps and working hard to be productive (which I have) I have also come to my realization of what exactly is holding me back. It’s not motivation, it’s not family or friends, it’s not even really me. It’s my space. Trying to get work done in an area that isn’t exactly defined as your own is a hard thing to accomplish. Since I live in a small (but perfect size for our family) apartment it has come to my realization that there is not one spot in the house that you can’t look around and see all the chores or things that are left undone. Even without a list of things to torment me – all I have to do is open my eyes and turn around!!

My parents went out-of-town and I invaded their space. I took all the things I need/want to work on and nothing more. I am surrounded by clean open space with lots of room and table space. It’s a crafter’s dream getaway!

I can wake up, get ready, get my chores done, and escape to my area to get things done! Emma can even come up and go hog-wild and it doesn’t change a thing. You can see that all the mess – is just my work stuff. Even with that pile of paperwork I still have room to sew! I mean how hard is it to pile a couple of books and paper together to make more room instead of looking at the dirty dishes, laundry, toys on the floor, other not as important paperwork in piles, and things you can’t move out of they way because you have no where else to put them!!

The hard part is that I don’t get to keep it. As soon as they are done with their trip I will be back into my old routine of things. The other hard part is knowing that we will be moving soon and I’ll have a chance to get my own space in my own house like this – but we aren’t exactly sure when that will be right now. We know it’s soon!! But there’s not an actual date set yet.

So if you are like me and easily distracted and weighed down by all the things you haven’t done. Get away from them! Pack up your things or find a room in your house that you can create your own getaway. I can’t tell you how clear my head has been while I’ve been working and how much progress I’ve made. Here’s just a few things:

Thoughtful Thursday: How to Step Up Your Game!

16 Feb

These past few days I’ve been daydreaming about what it would be like to go full-time with my business. I have been reading articles on etsy and WordPress with tips and hints and then I came across a new website I’ve never seen before! It’s about this man who gave up his job moved across the world and started two business!

I was reading his posts about tips on creating a less stressful life and also about setting yourself up on creating your own business. If you read Freshly Pressed you may know who I am talking about! There was something so intriguing about what he had to say that I ended up reading his entire blog in one sitting!! Now I know this is far from my usual posts about cleaning organizing and crafting but it’s been something I’ve been seriously interested for a while and this might just be the right time for me to reorganize my priorities and really make an opportunity for me!

So today I’m going to do a post about stepping up your game! This might not work for everyone but these are the steps I’ll be taking for the next few weeks to see if I’m headed in the right direction.

1. Create an easy work environment

This has been something I’ve been continually working on. Being a mother to a young child it’s important to have my own area that’s uncluttered and easy to pick things up and put them down without worrying about it. Also having a very small area to call my own there are some things that just can’t be left out (for example: the ironing board – there’s just no room for it). These next few weeks I’m going to finish up my area to make it the most accessible to my lifestyle and still be a great place to get work done.

2.  Get all of the daily chores done within the first hours of the day.

Since I haven’t been doing my daily lists anymore I’ve gotten in the habit if doing a few chores each day without thinking about them. Getting all of this done in the morning will leave me with plenty of time the rest of the day to do other things like concentrate on getting this business up and running!

3. Use time wisely

I know I’m not the only person that spends a little too much time on the computer, gets distracted by TV, or something else around the house that doesn’t necessary need that much attention! For the next few weeks I’ll be organizing my time by importance. First thing on my list is getting my inventory up and completing projects, then listing, then working on my storefront. That means working on the computer is the last thing on my list – which in the long run I think will benefit the amount of time I waste since I’ll be doing it last.

4. Keep motivation up!

The worst thing that happens to me when I have the time to get things done is being in a not so motivated mood. I did a post last Thursday about this called Bad Day Go Away! Keeping a positive attitude is a serious must do and for those procrastinators like me out there – tricking yourself into getting it done instead of putting it off is something that is necessary in order to boost your mood. Procrastinators may be the worst when it comes to getting things done but when they do accomplish something they get this enormous boost of self-pride so motivating yourself and getting the littlest things done will create that boost to keep you going!

5. Put yourself first

This is something that I am TERRIBLE at. The blog I was mentioning about said to learn to say No more. He said he was easily wrapped into doing things he didn’t want to do just because he had a hard time saying no and that is clearly a huge problem of mine. Instead of immediately saying yes to something – check your calendar and make sure you are giving yourself enough time to accomplish all your goals. Owning your own business isn’t easy and it’s definitely not going to happen if you let other people take your time away. Now I’m not telling you to say no to everything. You do need some down time and to have fun but don’t let someone take up your entire Sunday when you know that’s the only day of the week you have time to dive into your big projects.

6. Keep track of your progress more than your need to-dos

This is a great motivational booster as well as helpful when it comes to keeping track of what you have already done is like a reminder of how far you have gotten. It is important to know what you’d like to get done in order to stay on track but don’t concentrate on that as much as what you have accomplished. A long to do list only leads to stress and anxiety!

7. Take care of you

Getting enough sleep, eating right, and taking care of your body is one of the most important things of all. If you aren’t doing these three things there is no way you can accomplish any of the above without struggle! Keeping a set schedule of going to sleep and waking up will help your body adjust properly and be prepared for whats ahead. Even if you are in the middle of working on something it’s important to put it down and eat at an appropriate time. Food keeps the body going and if you aren’t taking care of those needs it’s going to make it hard to work efficiently.

These seven tips are going to be my guidelines for the next few weeks and I’ll be letting you know how they are working and if I’d change any of these! Feel free to share tips that help you get through the day and accomplish your goals.

Mom Jeans? That’s hardly my problem!

8 Jan

After having a child – I completely understand why almost every new mom buys mom jeans, wears baggy clothes, cuts off most of their hair , and hardly wears makeup. Mom jeans are hardly my problem! Since I quit my job and started working from home – my problem is MUCH worse! Try mom jeans, NO makeup, hair a hott mess (and not the cute kind), t-shirts, sweatshirts, your lucky if I remember to change out of my pj’s 😉

So even though I’m not one of those people who really does new years resolutions and I had already decided my resolution was to get my business further off the ground – I’m adding a few things – like for example – to remember that I was once hott. That I’m allowed to spend money on myself for things like clothes and a hair cut! That spending an hour or more “getting ready” was fun.

Tonight I was watching TV with Brian and checking out Pinterest because I’m addicted. Instead of looking at the DIY section I just went ahead and chose Everything to see what everyone else was looking at. As I’m scrolling down I see hott girls, pretty hair, makeup, cloths, crazy boots and I look at Brian and think to myself, “I am one lucky girl that he’s still here!”

If only I was rich and I could get a personal shopper to pick out clothes for me. I feel like after being in a hole (my house) for two years – I have no idea what’s hott anymore – heck I still have no idea what size clothes I wear – I’ve been in momville so long I’m pretty sure even if I went on a shopping spree I’d pick all the wrong things! How nice would it be to say oh hey – figure out what size I am, what looks good on me, and what’s in style and here’s your budget. I’m sure if I did find someone who wanted to do it they’d look at the budget and walk away.

I’m that person that never spends full price on clothes. My sister taught me long long ago how to find the best brands for the best deals and shopping used to be an adventure! I used to schedule the whole day and be ready to drive as far as I needed to go to dig through a bunch of clothes to find what most people would pay a fortune for. My personal shopper would probably cry at the thought of wasting time on me. Oh the days..

So how do you mom’s stay hott, find time to get ready AND shop, and the budget that goes with it? I definitely need all the tips I can get 😉

Crafts: One Successful Crafty Day!

2 Jul

Today I had planned on getting up early, running errands, buying everything I needed to complete the crafts I plan on doing for the craft fair, coming home, AND crafting! I quickly realized that my budget said I couldn’t buy EVERYTHING on my list so I prioritized and knocked a few things off but I think I still have plenty to go on 😉

My top choices have rearranged a little.. I initially was going to have the majority of my work be scarves, but after today.. I just can’t help but want to make a million burp cloths instead!! Check out what I did!

I also made a frame. Now here’s the warning. I know it’s not perfect. It’s flawed in many ways!! This was a trial and error for me and I have some tweaking to do so the next one comes out exactly as planned but I wanted you to see it anyways!

I was considering working on another burp cloth tonight but with E in bed I really don’t want to take the chance of waking her up! Normally with B in the house the TV is on or he’s playing video games and she goes to bed with the noise but with him away it’s been super quite around here.. If I jump in and start making noise she might wake up and boy do I not want to deal with that all by myself this weekend 😉 I think I might stick to making a new frame or crocheting. I’ll have plenty of time tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday to get things done so I’m not too worried!

Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend!

Daily Life: Just what I needed!

27 Apr

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Today was exactly what this girl needed! A break from the chaos but still a day of getting things done!

I had P today and she came a half hour early and left a half hour later. Her daddy is out-of-town and her mom is trying to “make it work”. Poor thing!! That’s okay with me though, I’ll either get an extra hour pay or get an hour off early soon. Not to mention that little P was in a great mood all day (except for a little mishap at 3:30 where she was cussing me out in baby babbles because she was tired.. whoops! Yeap, I tried everything but nap time then realized – wait a minute, she woke up a half hour earlier during her last nap time.. duh! The child is just needs some shut-eye!)  So overall work was a fairly easy day.

I got a good walk (stroller time) with the girls this morning and walked a lot further than I usually do which means endorphins for this mommy! Yay things that put me in a good mood 😀

I spent some serious me time while both the girls napped and read until I fell asleep too! Shut eye for mommy is a double plus!

And with all that activity going on I still managed to clean the entire kitchen, get the patio cleaned up and cushions put away for the crazy storm coming, and pick up after the little mess makers! Hoorayy!!

I also got a break on dinner. B and I ordered pizza and E apparently thought that was a wonderful choice and devoured it. No cooking, no cleaning, for fixing something for baby! This is just a perfect day for me.

Now I am relaxing on the couch, watching a recorded Property Virgins (I love that show) and enjoying the warm weather and cool rain with my patio door wide open.

Tomorrow is my day off/running errands day and I am excited for that too! We are stopping by JoAnn‘s for some crafty things, Babies R Us to pick up a potty and pull ups for E, heading to Lowe’s to trade in my cushion for the right size, maybe Sam’s to pick up some bulk things, then the grocery store. Hooray for food in the house!! It’ll be nice to have choices again instead of scrambling to find what we have left..

A couple other pluses – B is going golfing this weekend, and next week will be starting practicing tennis for a tournament with the guys in our country club! He hasn’t played in a while but I know he really misses it so it’ll be exciting to see him doing something he loves.

Saturday I might be going to an author signing at One More Page Books for Amy Brecount White who wrote the book Forget-Her-Nots.

There’s a lot to look forward to and maybe even some craftiness!

Hope you have a wonderful week and weekend with your family too!

Crafts: A Mom’s Day Off Success Story ;)

23 Apr

Let me just start off by saying that I absolutely love my child. I really really adore her – but today ROCKED! I put aside my daily chores, put aside the cleaning nagging feeling inside, put aside electronic distractions, gave my child to her Nana, and B even got out of the house to pick up a few things and wash his car 😀

Today was a completely awesome mommy day off and I have proof to show 😉

I’ve been dying to pull out my sewing machine so I started off with some scrap fabric I picked up and a zipper I had for another project 😛 I didn’t use a pattern or really measure (very well). I just made a zipper pouch for the fun of not having to follow directions, take twenty minutes to figure out what the heck they are saying, oh and hey I didn’t even iron the fabric 😛 I went all out and did it my way or the highway and I love it!! Now that I’ve finished making it, I have a better idea of an easier more flawless way to make it but who cares!? I just wanted to make SOMETHING! and I did .. so here it is 😀

I don’t know exactly what I am going to use it for yet, but who cares?! LOOK WHAT I MADE!! So proud of me 😀

After that I made some report cards for next week. Yes I would show you pictures but they aren’t that amazing. I kinda went skimpy/boring on them just because I wanted to get them done. If I get the itch to make them better after dinner I’ll see what I can do then maybe they’ll be picture worthy.

Then after that I took a lunch break! Yay two PB&J’s please and thank you! Then it was back to work, after I sat for a minute, and watched TV (insert guilty face). I blame B, he was lounging watching TV and I couldn’t resist.

Then back to work it was for me! I decided to use my new paint pens, yes!! I ordered some new paint pens 😀

So of course I had to use them Right Away!! Well if you saw my last monkey frame.. it was a sad disaster. I decided now that I have the colors I needed that I’d try again. Here’s how it turned out:

Much better looking monkeys if I do say so myself 😉 Well that was way too much fun! I needed today to kick it back and just be creative and I have a feeling I’m going to have to figure out how to do this with E somehow. I’ll have to come up with some plans on keeping her distracted happy and maybe even crafty with me (as in crayons and paper crafty). Never know until you try!?

Well it’s about time to go pick munchkin up so I’ll be back later tonight!

Love Always,

J
