Trunk or Treat!!!!

29 Oct

Emma had her first trick or treating event this year. My mother-in-law’s church was holding an event where they decorate the trunks of their cars and pass out candy to the little ones. Since it’s yucky with the storm coming they decided to hold it inside and go room to room instead. We practiced Emma saying “Trick or Treat”, holding out her bag, and saying thank you after. She caught on real fast!!

Emma picked out her fairy costume this year –  halfway through trick or treating she then decided she was a butterfly 😛

For the most part Emma was having a blast – she loved picking up candy from the doors that weren’t scary. If it was a scary looking door she’d run up to me with her arms in the air saying, “I too scared, I too scared, up mommy!”

Then we got to Dodo and Nana’s door and we were happy as can be!

I love that little smile!

She also enjoyed picking out which candy she wanted next. I let her have two choices and she shared with the rest of us 😉

I think this was the perfect way to get her familiar with trick or treating without being too scary and since she caught on so fast I’m even considering taking her out a little on Wednesday. Let the Halloween traditions begin!!

What kind of family traditions do you do for Halloween?

Thanks for stopping by!

Pure Joy

7 Oct

We went to Cox Farms yesterday and I think it opened Emma’s eyes to a whole new world! There were slides and playgrounds and so many things to climb on! It was a gorgeous day and if you live in Northern Virginia I highly recommend letting your child go wild here. Even though there were a million things to do this is what Emma enjoyed this the most:

I love that smile 🙂

Here are some other pictures from the day:

Emma and Tyler hugging 🙂

Checking out all the animals on the farm!

Emma loved the big pink truck! I’ll have to remember that when she gets older 😉

Tyler and Emma holding hands!

Checking out the view from the top of the ship!

Emma sticking her butt out while she hugs the bunny 😛 I have no idea why she hugs like this!

Sitting on the caboose of the train!

Oink Oink! Emma’s a pig 🙂

Best Friends Forever

Going on the hayride! Emma does not like loud moving tractors but somehow we got on the hayride without a fuss! ❤

I’m pretty sure she had a blast 🙂

My Favorite Thrift Store!

24 Aug

I talk about going to Blue Ridge Hospice Thrift shop a lot – but I’ve never shown you what it’s like to shop there so I thought the next time I go I’m taking pictures – and I did!

My favorite things about this thrift store are:

  • All the proceeds go the Blue Ridge Hospice
  • You get a points card and a punch for every time you shop there! I’m halfway through mine and I’ll get $10 off my next purchase of $20 bucks or more (which is not hard to do here).
  • They have everything in sections that are clearly defined so if you are searching for something specific you can easily find it.
  • They have two floors of thrifty goodness!! (This place is huge)
  • They have a room dedicated just to craft supplies ❤ They had me at hello.

This mirror was so cool – I am actually mad I didn’t buy it. I’ve been seeing these pins on pinterest where people design things around a mirror and this one seemed like a perfect match – but since my storage is overflowing I’m not allowed to buy any new big projects until I finish the ones I have 😦

These chairs were AWESOME! In this family we like dark wood and these would be perfect for us. I even like the fabric choice but it was a little stained so I would need to reupholster it (not a problem). The problem? We don’t need chairs, nor do we have room to store them. Another bummer.

Apparently I have a thing for chairs – but can’t you see these in a little kids playroom!? Oh so adorable 🙂

Then we come to the craft room -which I only took to pictures of because I was entirely to destracted by all the goodies to stop and take more pictures (sorry!) but check out this wall of baskets! If you can’t find a basket here – I’m afraid you need to make your own! They have every size and every kind you could as for – even cute picnic baskets!

Tada!!! The fabric section. I could probably spend a lifetime in here if they let me. In fact the lady checking me out said she might almost pay me to take it away ❤ I told her I’d gladly take her up on that offer any day!!

So the pictures you are missing from the rest of that room are ribbon, yarn, thread, patterns, paper crafts, and more. It’s like a mini craft store in there! They even have a sewing machine!

More on my thrifty shopping later – this isn’t the last Blue Ridge Hospice post and I can promise you that 😉

Love Always,

J

A Job Worth Doing

30 May

It’s come to my realization that many of you out there hate your job, so much so that you dread waking up in the morning knowing that you have to go do it.

NEWS FLASH!

You don’t have to hate your job. In fact, you don’t have to do that job at all!

Now before you go rolling your eyes at me, let’s think this one through. The reason most people work is to consume enough money to live our lives in which we think are appealing or at the very least going to bring dinner on the table. I had that job. I hated that job. I spent countless hours complaining about it, making my husband miserable about, and ruining the life I always wanted because I was so upset with the job.

My husband and I sat down and took a look at our finances and compared how much I made to how much I spent at that job.

  • I was making X a month.
  • Spending A on gas to get there and back each month.
  • Spending B on food for lunch each month.
  • Spending C on easier meals to cook at home (premade things) because I was too lazy to do them when I got home each month.
  • This does not include D on bills that were created from me having to work (ex. daycare, fixing the car, doctors appointments for stress & anxiety)

X-A-B-C equaled a whopping 100 bucks a month. I was in complete shock. I was spending almost my entire monthly paycheck just for work and I hated my job!! I looked at my life and how I was living it. My job was not worth working $100 a month – I can’t even picture what job would be worth that little.

Then I sat down and thought about all the things I love to do.

  • I love spending time with my daughter.
  • I love taking care of children. (Possible Income)
  • I love organizing things. (Possible Income)
  • I love to write and take pictures. (Possible Income)
  • I love finding great deals on things. (Helps budget money for other things)
  • I’m not the best at cooking, but I like trying. (Not an income but also can be a money saver instead of going out to eat)
  • I like being crafty and making things. (Possible Income)
My husband and I talked about which of the items above that posed as a possible income would be something that our family could handle. I chose taking care of children because out of all those things the start up cost was almost nothing and it was my favorite one. I work PART TIME Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8-5 and I’m making exactly what I made at my previous job. Out of all that income I don’t spend any money on gas, lunches out, easier meals at home, daycare, extra car expensive, doctors appointments, fancy clothes for work, heck – I hardly buy make up anymore!!
Because I made the decision to stop doing what I hated, and find a way to do what I love – I now make three times as much as I did at my other job. I also have time to spend with my daughter, organize, write, take pictures, find great deals, attempt at cooking, and make crafty things. I even get to sell the crafty things I make to have EVEN more income!

I will say that this wasn’t easy. We had a month where we had to make ends meet and live with the little income we did have. It taught us how to better manage our money, what we really needed as opposed to what we wanted, and made us more thankful when we did have more money. It may seem impossible but it’s not – you can do what you love and still live the life you always wanted.

Love Always,

J

21 May

from google images

Some of you may have noticed that it’s been a little over a week since I last posted. Some of you had no clue 😉 That’s totally okay! After a weekend trip to see some of my favorite people I took a little break from blogging. Instead I spent a majority of my time on Etsy working on my shop, working out, trying to cook better meals, and spending some quality time with my family.

What you’ve missed while I’ve been gone:

A girls weekend road trip! Emma and I headed to Richmond to see my two favorite girls: Stephanie and Tiffany.

While we were there we checked out the playgrounds in Richmond – we like them better than ours because they have sand boxes!!

I played around with some yarn thinking I’d make a cool necklace since scarves are out of season.

Then I decided to make a fancy one!

Which then led to fancy bracelets and anklets!

Ahhh then a day trip to the beach with my hubby!! This was exactly the kind of getaway I needed from the computer 😉

And since Brian was so sweet to take me to the beach – I took him to the Nationals vs Orioles game!

Needless to say it was a much needed vacation! So I hope you are happy to have me back but since I’ll be limiting my time on the computer to avoid wasting away and actually enjoy this summer: posts will be short, sweet, and to the point!!

Goal Number One: Spend A Little Dough

24 Mar

After carefully scrutinizing my pro’s and con’s list from yesterday’s post: Figuring Out Me – I’ve come up with my first goal for this blog! Sunday morning I am getting up and going yard sale/thrift store shopping!! I’m taking 20 bucks in cold hard cash and buying things to make brand new! My goal is to stick within that 20 dollar budget and make a miracle happen. I’m going to lean towards items that are for organizing, home decor, furniture, and things I can’t resist 😛

My long term goal within this goal – is to do it as many Sunday’s as I can! If they are items that I don’t think I’d use in my own home then I’ll be putting them up for sale on etsy. If I do use them you’ll get to see how and where I use them 😀

Who’s ready to be amazed!?

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Always,

J

Q&A

What got you interested in crafting?

I always did friendship bracelets on car trips to San Diego, cause it was 6 hours of nothing to do. Mom and I used to bead together, but we stopped. I picked it back up in 2010, and just couldn’t stop.

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

It truly depends project wise. I love my friendship bracelets, because of how much work I have to put into them. The Jack Sparrow bracelet:

takes around 20-25 hours of complete work time to make. I love being able to just sit down and focus on this.

Beading wise, I made a bracelet called “The Red Queen”, which recently sold:

Absolutely loved the piece, and I’m still proud of it.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

I’ve always had a fascination with Grimm’s story of Snow White, and it was a nickname of mine in the past. The concept of the poisoned apple just stuck, and I found it to be something beautiful. It’s definitely unique, and catches everyone’s attention.

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

I’d call it Poisoned Apple Jewelers. I’ve done mostly jewelry thus far and that’d be my specialty. Scarves and possibly hats are to come soon.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

Starting any friendship bracelet pattern is very challenging for me, but the most difficult one I’ve been working on is a Nyan Cat bracelet. SO MANY COLORS! I’m also starting one of the Sailor Moon icon, because it was a huge part of my childhood.
What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

1) To get up to 200 Facebook fans. I know when I hit 100 I’m having a giveaway, so stay tuned for that one 🙂
2) To rely more on this as my job rather than making Starbucks. As much as I love working as a Barista, I’d love my passion to be the main focus on my life.
3) I’ll be finishing my associates, so I’m hoping to save up some cash and expand into more in-person retail. I’d love to do house parties (like Cookie Lee or all those candle companies do) or find a spot in the mall to rent out. It’d be a dream come true.

What inspires you to be crafty?

Music and visual arts are some of my biggest inspirations. One of my favorite necklaces was inspired by the movie “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”. it’s absolutely fun, just doing ordinary stuff like listening to your iPod, and you’ll think “That’s a great concept for a new piece! I have to do it!”

What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

Customer Service and keeping my customers informed. If you’re sick and can’t work on their piece, you have to tell them. I feel like letting them know the truth is so much better than taking so long and not keeping them updated about what’s going on.
Another thing that’s my strong point is that I take pride in making every single piece that I do. It’s not often that I find someone spending 20 hours on making a single bracelet. People have asked why I do this and tell me I’m crazy, but that’s my craft. That’s what I take pride in.

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

Better advertising/word of mouth. My website, Facebook, Twitter, and business cards don’t seem to be enough to always attract people in. I’m talking with people about doing craft fairs and things of that sort, and just trying to get more exposure. It’s the one difficult thing to do as a one-person shop.

What got you interested in crafting?

When I was younger, my mother taught me how to sew. My grandmother introduced me to knitting by giving me a book on it even though she didn’t knit herself. Around the time I got married, I begin to experiment with some paper and floral crafts. (I was outraged by some of the prices for wedding favors, flowers, etc. and decided to see what I could do myself.)

What has been your favorite project to make and why?

One of my favorite projects to make is the sticky notes pad. These make great, inexpensive gifts. Also, I am still very much a fan of writing notes (reminders for myself, a note for my husband, etc) and these make it convenient to always have something handy for leaving a quick note.

What’s the secret behind your etsy name?

My husband calls me “Monet”. Also, “ware” is defined as “articles of merchandise or manufacture; goods.” Therefore, “monetware”. (About 7 years ago, I said to myself that if I ever had to sell my goods, I would use that name for my line of merchandise. Etsy presented the perfect opportunity to really play up the name for my shop.)

If you could open up a shop in your town what would you call it and what would it be like?

I would call it “Monetware”…(of course!) I would sell my merchandise, plus I would have a little section of the shop to serve tea and desserts. I would also offer customized services that would include event planning, etc.

What is the most challenging thing you have made?

That would probably have to be one of the necklaces from my “Beads & Buttons” Collection. It involves wire bending and layering of the buttons. Challenging, but some of my favorite pieces to date.

What are some of your goals you hope to achieve within the next year?

I would love to do more marketing in order to get more exposure, which would hopefully lead to more sales. I would also like to expand the products that I offer. I have a few new things I want to try…you’ll have to stay tuned to see.

What inspires you to be crafty?

One of the most enjoyable and satisfying feelings is to see others happy because they have received something they need, want, or didn’t know they needed or wanted. To be able to provide that “thing”, even if it is just a covered post-it notes pad….inspires me to continue to create and be crafty. It’s also very relaxing to sit for hours and make cards, jewelry, etc.
What is your best quality when it comes to your crafts?

Being able to combine colors and patterns in a way that complements the particular item. (It’s funny, sometimes when it comes to matching up my clothes, I am at a loss…but there is usually no hesitation when it comes to my crafts!)

If you could have one thing to help your store what would it be?

More exposure for my products. Also, I am still working on taking better pictures so that the merchandise can be seen in the best possible way.
