Addiction: Blogging vs. Living

15 Jun

What happens to an addicted blogger decides to live without technology for a period of time? (Note I still had my phone – I just limited my time on it)

  • The first few hours you are having mini anxiety attacks wondering if you are going to make it and you might even log back in just to see if everything’s okay.
  • The first day you spend twitching wondering if you have any views or your followers are mad because you haven’t posted but then say “oh yeah it’s only be 24 hours they probably don’t care”.
  • The second day you are seriously questioning your decision to stay off it and think all of your followers are going to hate you, leave, never come back, unsubscribe, and shake their head thinking “another one bites the dust”.
  • The third day you wake up wanting to just check it once – that’s it, then you’ll be okay for the rest of the day you promise.
  • The fourth day you get an email from a blog on your phone that you are subscribed to and shake your head wishing you were as awesome and dedicated as they were.
  • The fifth day you swear you won’t look at your blog or even open your iphone app!! (which at that point wasn’t a problem for me because it kept crashing grrrr)
  • The next few days you find things to keep you busy like reading an actual book instead of your PC downloaded Nook or other blogs or spending some quality time outside!
  • The last few days you are sitting around thinking, wow I should totally write a blog post about this and take a picture so they can all see!!!
  • The very last day you are overflowing with things you want to blog about, don’t know what to start with, and if you weren’t going to be made fun of you’d jump up and down with glee that you’ve made it this long and will be back to blogging in no time!!!!!
  • The last few hours, you are sitting next to the computer, staring at it beating yourself up about the fact that all you want to do is LOG ON RIGHT NOW!
  • The last ten minutes, you have up until now kept yourself busy with mindless miscellaneous tasks around the house and you are seriously at your breaking point with excitement and anticipation.
  • The moment you log on – it’s like a breath of fresh air. YOU ARE BACK BABY!!
  • After you write and submit your post you click on your view stats every minute to see if your followers are going to come back or hate you forever!
Thanks for coming back 😉

Creating A Following!

18 Apr

Today I’m going to talk about my blogging experience and what I have realized what works for me and doesn’t work for me when it comes to followers. It has been slightly over a year now that I have been blogging and I am getting close to having 200 followers! I have also had a lot of good and bad change within that year. Here’s a list of things to get you started!

1. Pictures are worth a thousand words! Most people write blogs because they love writing. Their spelling is impeccable, they are always grammatically correct, and have the uncanny ability to keep your eyes glued to their page until they are finished amazing you with their words. Other’s like me, well we use pictures! I lack many of the skills written above and I am a very visual person so instead of WOWing you with words, I like to wow you with my pictures!

2. Don’t be afraid to be YOU! This was a tough one for me to learn. When I first started this blog my husband and I wanted to keep  who we were pretty private. We didn’t want any pictures of our faces and especially Emma’s. Heck we didn’t even tell you our names for a while! Instead we used codes like E for Emma (E and I went to the park today!).

After re-reading some of my posts I just rolled my eyes. How was a new reader supposed to know what the heck an E was let alone that it was my daughter!? Then our names just started rolling out. After that I said to heck with it all and posted pictures of us. When I started out all my readers were family and friends so there was no point in hiding who we were. After I started getting a little more of a following I realized that I didn’t want to hide who we were. I was darn proud of our family and then the pictures just started coming. Honestly – it’s so much more fun letting you see a picture of Emma riding her first bike then saying, “Hey guess what! Emma rode her first bike today!

3. Are you writing this blog for you or the Readers? Here is another tough one. Some days I am writing posts because I can’t wait to show YOU what I’ve been working on and I can’t wait to hear what you think about it. Other days I am writing a post because I need to get something off my chest or I just need to ramble to someone besides the people I usually annoy 😉

It’s okay to be writing for you and or the readers but the most important thing you need to know is that if you aren’t interested in what you are writing about – your readers won’t be either.

4. Stick with it or change it up? I have heard many different opinions from bloggers that if you want consistent followers that you need your blog topics to be consistent and stay focused on what it is that makes readers keep coming back. Here’s where I beg to differ. As much as I love reading blogs that are about certain things (thrifty finds, organizing, home renovating) I like the occasional post about the writer themselves, their family, daily activities, and things that may have nothing to do with their usual topic!

I also believe that no one is an energizer bunny and writing the same thing on a daily basis can make the things you love the most get REALLY old REALLY fast! Mixing it up is okay – who knows, maybe you’ll get a follower that would have never searched for you before but since you wrote an off-topic post they found you and love you!

5. Respond! It’s important to acknowledge when someone leaves a comment on your blog or emails you about it. I’ve made so many blogger friends that I fell in love with their blog because I had a connection with them that was stronger than just seeing their page. They contacted me to let me know they felt the same way, loved my idea, or just appreciated a post I wrote. It’s amazing what a little comment can do so as well as responding to the comments you get, don’t hesitate to comment on other blogs! Get connected and make new friends!

I hope some of these things help you out while you are blogging and make an impact on your following!

Thanks again to all those followers who have been here through my process of becoming the blogger that I am and to celebrate that. When I reach 200 followers I will be giving out random giveaways to my followers!

How to Make a Pencil Case

With the new school year nearly upon us in Australia, I am making up a few easy zipperedpatchwork pencil cases. This is a great scrap buster project. The little zippered pouches can be used for all manner of things. Mine was sized to fit approx 6 pens; or a small pack of tissues; or a small notebook and pen; or a few cosmetics.

Figuring out Me!

23 Mar

After going through a process of making a schedule and figuring out how to be the most productive I took a little siesta! It feels like ages since I’ve been in a routine of things even though it’s only been two weeks but a toddler can do that to you! All it took was missing a few naps and I was completely off tune 😉

So now that things are back to normal around here (someone decided naps weren’t all that bad), I’ve been picking up my old routine habits and restoring order!

One thing that I always left time for in my schedule was some research and reading time! I love reading other blogs and success stories for small businesses and something caught my attention. I read that the most successful businesses and blogs spend three years failing, learning, striving, and making it work! Another post I read said that you have to do what you love the most in order for it to be something you want to keep up with!

So I’m all set and prepared for another two years of failing, learning, striving, and making it work! I’m also working on me and finding out exactly what it is I love, what I’m good at, and what I’m not so great at. Here’s a list of pro’s and con’s that I came up with – thanks to a little help from the people I love the most 😀

Pros: Things I’m good at, enjoy, or personality traits that are positive for my blog and business

* I love making something new out of something old.

* I can visualize an entire project in minutes.

* I’m easily motivated & excited.

* I get a kick out organizing & planning things.

* I’m always up for trying something new.

* I have this overwhelming need to help.

* I like sharing & teaching others.

* I always keep an open mind – nothing is impossible!

Cons: Things that I’m not so great at and probably need to work on or just keep in mind while I’m moving forward

* I’m either indecisive or jump into things too quickly.

* I strive to be budget friendly – but often times I spend more than I’d like.

* I overwhelm myself with too many things.

* I can get easily frustrated.

* I hate cleaning up an unfinished project but I can’t leave a mess out.

* I’m easily distracted!

* I have a hard time saying No.

* I don’t always finish everything I start.

* I never leave myself enough time.

So now that I’ve got this list in front of me I feel like I can put all my pro’s in to order and make the best out of my blog & etsy store as possible. I just can’t forget about those con’s 😉

I’ll keep you posted on how this process is working out for me and how it’s helping my blog and business!

What are your pro’s and con’s?

Here’s what you’ve missed!

15 Mar

Sorry I have been MIA – this gorgeous weather has me cleaning and spending most of my time outdoors as well as some other reasons you’ll see below. There are so many new things happening around here that I can’t wait to talk about but since I don’t want to spoil it all – I’m just going to show you a few things that we’ve been doing (without spoils). Then when I get my schedule back in tact I’ll share all the goodies!

Here’s a few things you might have missed:

I attempted my first etching – which is obvious because it’s all uneven but who cares!!!!!!! I am so proud of me 😀 Once I get stuck in the house again I’ll be removing labels off of wine bottles like its nobodys business!

Since Brian and I have both been successfully working and doing our best at not spending any money unless it’s bills, gas, groceries, or necessities – we spoiled ourselves a little! We each bought a few things for ourselves and we bought these for Emma! How cute? She’s been wearing them almost all week since it’s been so nice outside and she likes to proudly say these are Emma’s NEW shoes!

Here is another reason I haven’t had ANY time to update/work on my etsy page & blog. Someone decided that napping is no fun and they don’t want to do it any more. Therefore my two hours of work time during nap time have turned into scramble around with my head cut off time because I have no idea how to function without Emma having a nap. Apparently neither does Emma because here she is passed out on the couch an hour before bedtime. She decided to put herself to bed here – lol.

Our first nice weather accomplishment! I took an entire day to get the back patio set up, organized, toys cleaned, and make it Emma and baby friendly! It took FOREVER. But Emma decided to accomplish something as well – she climbed up the slide and went down all by herself! For the past year – all she would do is climb up and scream every time you tried to help her slide down. HOORAYY  she’s becoming so independent 😉

If you hadn’t noticed the same squinting face above – it’s Emma’s new way to say CHEESE to the camera. Silly girl. This was a Mommy-Daughter day out that involved so many errands that I had completely no intention of getting them all done. Since someone was a complete angel we got ALL except one of the errands completed (and that wasn’t her fault or mine!) so we got a milkshake for a treat – that Emma kept calling a cake lol.

So it’s not that I don’t love you. I haven’t posted because I’ve had my hands a little full these days! Either someone will start getting Quiet Alone Time or Nap Time happening soon or I’m going to have to find 2 different hours to get some work done 😉

Thanks for stopping by!

Love you all and hope to be back to chat soon!
